PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: Windows XP Home
Problem Application Name & Version: Internet Explorer
Problem Hardware Make & Model: 2003 Dell Inspiron laptop
Error Messages: none

Internet Explorer has reset my homepage to c:/sarchpage.html., and my address address bar is no longer functioning.

I ran CWShredder and let it do it's fixes. It removed the searchpage.html file, which I could not do before, however when I try to open Internet Explorer I get a message that says: Cannot find 'file:///c:searchpage.html' Make sure path and Internet address are correct.

The address bar still doesn't function. When I type a url into the bar it still tries to redirect me to c:/searchpage.html.

Here's my hijackthis stuff:

Hi lopper, Not a good idea leaving Hijackthis on your desktop---Anything
removed by it will make backups (the backups will be spread all over your
desktop) Don't delete backups until everything is running ok)

Make a folder for Hijackthis and copy and paste hijackthis into that new
folder and then delete the original on the desktop
EG...Right click an empty spot on your desktop---Select NEW---Folder---
Name that new folder HJT

Set Windows to show Hidden files and folders
Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Ensure that you have the latest version of CWShredder(check for update)

With CWShredder open and ALL other windows closed let CWS FIX all problems
Next open up Hijackthis---Put a check next to these entries and then
FIX CHECKED when ALL other windows are closed

RESTART your computer in SAFE MODE

In safe mode search for this file or folder and remove it if found

c:\searchpage.html

Open Hijackthis again and remove those entries one more time if present
Run another fix with CWShredder
RESTART back in Normal mode

Access your Internet options via Control panel
or Right click the IE icon and left click properties
Under the Programs tab---"Reset Web Settings"
Under the General tab----Delete Cookies and files and Reset Home page

Finally, I would download a Spyware Checker
I use both Adaware 6 and Spybot 1.3

Adaware----Install----Check for updates-----Run a scan and fix everything it finds
http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button

Spybot----Install--Search for updates(online)-----Check for problems---fix everything in RED
http://beam.to/spybotsd
The link is posted as Spybot S&D 1.2, but you will probably be directed to version 1.3

Post back with a Fresh Hijackthis log, this hijacker can be sometimes hard to shake the first time....

Could you please Restart your computer after running one or both of those
Spyware checkers, before posting back with another Hijackthis log

I tried everything today and it seemed to work like a charm. I really appreciate your help here as my next course of action was to take the thing into the shop, and I really didn't want to do that.

Thanks again. Cheers!

Well, it's back and it's worse than ever.

I now have a new problem where apparant key words are underlined and turned into links for me to follow to a search page, a different search page than c:/searchpage.html. I've also encountered lots of pop ups, although I have a pop up blocker installed, and icons appearing on my desktop.

I ran Spybot again and fixed some stuff, but I got a message saying that it couldn't fix some of the problems and that a restart may be helpful. I clicked okay and restarted my computer to let Spybot run. It did its thing, but when I ran Spybot again there was a ton of new stuff in there.

Now I've got some bargainbin.exe file in my computer according to Spybot, but I can't seem to find it, and there are a ton of things that Spybot said that it couldn't fix.

I'll do the fixes from the post above and then post another hijack this list.

This is depressing. Sad

A couple of side notes:

"Find and delete these files or folders...C:\WINDOWS\System32\bridge.dll"

-I looked for this file and didn't have it. Is that bad?

"Navigate to your temp folder and delete the Whole CONTENTS...C:\Documens and Settings\shamalamadingdong\Local Settings\Temp"

-I tried to delete the contents of the folder, but it would only delete the first few things before getting hung up at the Temporary Internet Files folder. I'd get this message: Can not delete NETWOR~2.GIF. Cannot find specified file. etc, etc..

Is that bad?

From my last HJT log: "04 - Global Setup: loader.exe"

-I was supposed to let HJT fix this, but it was not there to select. Everything else was there and fixed.

Other than those few issues everything went fine. Please let me know if there's anything else that I need to do. Thank you.

Looking good lopper

Did you try doing a Disk Cleanup in safe Mode?

Optionally you can have Hijackthis fix this entry
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
Considered a resource hog, not required on startup.

One other thing, if you find that your computer is running ok,
Before booting into safe mode you may want to disable system restore
----enable system restore when you return to Normal Mode
Just in case you have any bad guys in your restore folder, you wouldn't want to have them return
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm

I would also suggest that you download this program----
SpywareBlaster--Help prevent spyware from being installed
Here's part of Tony Klein's speech---a well respected security expert

A frequently heard question is "how on earth did I get infected with all that spyware in the first place?"(by TonyKlein)

Well, you usually get infected because your security settings are too low.

Here are a number of recommendations that will help tighten them, and which will contribute to making you a less likely victim:

1) Watch what you download!
Many freeware programs, and P2P programs like Grokster, Imesh, Kazaa and others are amongst the most notorious, come with an enormous amount of bundled spyware that will eat system resources, slow down your system, clash with other installed software, or just plain crash your browser or even Windows itself.

2) Go to IE > Tools > Windows Update > Product Updates, and install ALL Security Updates listed.
It's important to always keep current with the latest security fixes from Microsoft.
Install those patches for Internet Explorer, and make sure your installation of Java VM is up-to-date. There are some well known security bugs with Microsoft Java VM which are exploited regularly by browser hijackers.

3) Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.

Now press "Custom Level."

In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

Now you will be asked whether you want ActiveX objects to be executed and whether you want software to be installed.
Sites that you know for sure are above suspicion can be moved to the Trusted Zone in Internet Option/security.

So why is activex so dangerous that you have to increase the security for it?
When your browser runs an activex control, it is running an executable program. It's no different from doubleclicking an exe file on your hard drive.
Would you run just any random file downloaded off a web site without knowing what it is and what it does?

And some more advice:

4) Install Javacool's SpywareBlaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
It will protect you from all spy/foistware in it's database by blocking installation of their ActiveX objects.

Download and install, download the latest updates, and you'll see a list of all spyware programs covered by the program (NOTE: this is NOT spyware found on your computer)
Press "select all", then "kill all checked", and you're done.
The spyware that you told Spywareblaster to set the "kill bit" for won't be a hazard to you any longer.
Although it won't protect you from every form of spyware known to man, it is a very potent extra layer of protection.
Don't forget to check for updates every week or so.

Let's also not forget that SpyBot Search and Destroy has the Immunize feature which works roughly the same way.
It can't hurt to use both.

5) Another brilliant program by Javacool we recommend is SpywareGuard.
It provides a degree of real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.
http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html

An anti-virus program scans files before you open them and prevents execution if a virus is detected - SpywareGuard does the same thing, but for spyware! And you can easily have an anti-virus program running alongside SpywareGuard.
It now also features Download Protection and Browser Hijacking Protection!

6) IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm#IESPYAD

Finally, after following up on all these recommendations, why not run Jason Levine's Browser Security Tests.
http://www.jasons-toolbox.com/BrowserSecurity/
They will provide you with an insight on how vulnerable you might still be to a number of common exploits.

How to surf the Internet more safely with Internet Explorer:
http://www.windows-help.net/features/surf-safe.html
