Next, would you please open CWShredder and Fix everthing it finds,
don't just do a scan.....
RESTART your computer in Safe Mode

Find and delete these, even do a search on your computer
c:\searchpage.html <--- the searchpage.html

RESTART your computer in Normal mode
Please do a Disk Cleanup and delete temp Internet files and cookies
before opening a New browser window

Would you also download Ad-Aware 6 ( It's free)

http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button

After you download the program and CHECK FOR UPDATES
Could you set these options please

Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Scanning Engine:
check: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

- Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Cleaning Engine:
Check: "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Press "Scan Now"

- Check option "Use Custom scanning options"
- Check option "Activate In-Depth Scan"
- Press "Select drives\folders to scan"
- Select the active partition which is usually C:

Now press "Next" to let Ad-aware scan your drives...
It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys.
Right-click in that pane and choose "select all"

Now press "Next" again.
It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK.

Hmmm...

Good advice, Bendit.

You're definately more experienced than me, but let me try to offer some additional steps.  I'm not completely convinced that your method will rid Lyle of his problem.

CW shredder MAY eliminate his problem, but it may not.

Bendit definately found all of the registry entries that are responsible for the problem, but I would also delete all of the files associated with those entries.

I can forsee this scenario:
1.  Lyle deleted all of the entries.
2.  Lyle posted his new hijackthis log.
3.  Lyle reboots his computer
4.  The files that weren't deleted reload the entire process, and create the same problem.

Thus:

Delete the following files in safe mode:
C:\WINDOWS\bs3.dll
C:\WINDOWS\bsx5.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\nzdd.dll
Search for this file on your harddrive:  mshp.dll

You might wait for benditup's approval before deleting the files; but I am fairly confident that they pose a threat.

PS.  You have an enormous number of processes running.  You may want to consider tinkering with your startup script to increase your RAM storage capacity and speed up your computer.  I can help you with this if you want.

Thanks for everyone's kind time and patience.

Ive checked the Hijack This log and the files Benditup told me to remove appear to have 'stayed' removed.

I took your advice Cadaverlab: C:\WINDOWS\bs3.dll and C:\WINDOWS\bsx5.dll aren't there (although bs3.dllADD and bsx5.dllASDD are there... should I delete those?) and I deleted C:\WINDOWS\System32\nzdd.dll in safe mode. I had already deleted mshp.dll.

However, when I booted up again, an error message of "Realdownload cant start please reinstall the product" came up, something to do with Realplayer I presume.

Cadaverlab I am very much interested in speeding up my computer and would love any advice you can suggest to me.

Thanks again every, I'm very grateful for your help.

First, I have one question, and then I will tell you how to fix the problem.

Look at the bar in the bottom right part of the screen.  Do you see a vast array of icons there?

My guess is that the answer is yes.  This means you have a bunch of programs running in your RAM that could potentially be slowing down your system; not to mention adding eyesores to the sanctity of your desktop.

I have 2 programs running besides vital system process:  Quicktime and volume controller for my soundcard.  EVERYTHING ELSE, I removed.

Stuff I don't like are toolbars and instant messengers that stay booted eternally.  You have several of these I think you should remove.  Beyond that, some people run antivirus software and firewalls; and these are okay -- but when I'm running games that eat memory and such, I'd rather be without them.  I prefer to run scans when I'm having problems than be "protected" 24/7.

It all depends on your preferences.  Depending on your answer to my question, I'll see what I can do.  Please give a detailed summary of all the programs that show up on this bottom right corner.

In order I have:
1. AOL Messenger
2. Internet ADSL Status properties, disconnect, etc)
3. Spyware Guard (stops home page being changed)
4. Printer (Epson C40)
5. Quicktime
6. Sagem DSL Status (packets transmitted/recieved)
7. Norton Antivirus
8. Sound system adjust
9. Yahoo Messenger
10. MSN Messenger
11. 'Remove Hardware Icon' for the USB ADSL modem.
12. M Audio Delta soundcard (which I can't use yet, no decent
speakers and amplifier!)

Surely there's not much point in me closing all the messengers since I talk to many people with them? Any suggestion very welcome though.

Well... everything there seems okay, I guess.  Too much **** for me to deal with on my machine though.  How much RAM you got; and how fast is your processor?  And do you ever have problems with the speed of your machine?

I have 512MB ram and a 1.8Ghz processor. Ive not had any major issues with speed, but I'd like things to be as efficient as possible.

Eh... You're probably okay then.  512MB RAM is probably sufficient.  Just know that if you ever need more speed, shutting down those programs one by one may help.

I have the "searchpage.html" virus and cannot download anything without getting the searchpage site.  Is the Hijack program or anything available at my local Best Buy store to help me get rid of this nuisance?  Thanks,  AL

Hi k3roj, Can you please start your own topic
When you come back after running Hijackthis just click on the NEW TOPIC
at the top

Would you please download Hijackthis---Important---Create a permanent
folder
EG---- Open MyDocuments----Right click an empty spot and select NEW---Folder----Name the new folder HJT ---this is where you will want to save Hijackthis too and backups will be stored there.
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe

Do a SCAN----Scan will change to SAVE LOG----copy and paste the WHOLE contents of the log
here... Don't try and fix anything yet----It is all important
