I have an IBM Thinkpad 600 laptop and it will not start Windows 98.

I was in the middle of word processing when I found that suddenly many of the characters were being displayed incorrectly or not at all. The right hand keys do not work at all, except Enter and backspace and a couple of the letters. Most of the left hand side keys work, although a is displayed as ";a".

I wanted to see whether this was just a Windows problem so I restarted in MS-DOS mode. However, now every time I start the computer I get an MS-DOS prompt but it will get no further. I cannot type "windows" or "exit" or whatever command loads Windows from th startup prompt as the required keys don't work!

I have tried all manner of things to solve the problem but none of them have worked. Trying to load in safe mode does not work - it only displays an IBM diagnostics tool and when I use that it reports no problem with any hardware. None of the offical Windows bootdisks, or the unofficial ones I have tried to load onto it, work. When using these bootdisks, I am given the option of how to load Windows - either with the Windows 98 CD or without - but in both cases the DOS prompt loads various generic drivers such as the hard drive (I think) as you would expect it to do, but every time it ends by giving me the DOS prompt and advising me to type "HELP" to get assistance.

I am currently running Norton startup virus checker on it but it is very unlikely it will fix the problem, although the fact that it is scanning shows that there are still files on the computer - they haven't all been lost. A small amount of water was spilt on the keyboard a few minutes before it went wrong, which is the more likely cause

If I can't solve the problem soon I will have to send it in to be repaired. However, I am trying to avoid this if at all possible as I need the laptop for some important work!

I have spent at least 5 hours trying to solve the problem but without success. I would very much appreciate any help you can give.
