Hi I'm using windows xp and for the past few weeks, whenever i try to open notepad, i get the error message "the c:\windows\system32\autochk.exe application cannot be run in win32 mode". It's quite annoying really. Does anybody know what I can do? I've tried resetting my pc to a past restore date, but that doesn't seem to have helped.

Thanks Smiley

Hello Michael...

There are some potential exploits that have been found in the notepad program - so, if yours is not working - a trip over to Trend and the free "scan" might be a good idea
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Also run Adaware
 http://download.com.com/redir?pid=10214379&merid=69274&mfgid=69274<ype=dl_dlnow&lop=link&edId=3&siteId=4&oId=3000-8022-10214379&ontId=8022&dlrs=1&destUrl=%2F3001-8022-10214379.html

And Spybot Search & Destroy
http://download.com.com/3001-8022-10194058.html

You can pretty much put a tick in all boxes and have each app fix or repair.
After re-boot.
Try notepad and post back.

hi.

thanks for your help.

I tried what you recommended, but I still can't get notepad to open.

Spybot search and destroy kept freezing halfway through scanning my computer though....

Any other ideas?

Ok...what is your OS?
What your PC specs?
Did you make it to Trend Micro for a Scan?
There are a few folders and files that both Adaware and Spybot get to and it seems that it's not doing anything, but they are.
But you say it freezes as in the mouse and everything on the screen...right?
Let me know.

Hi. I tried all that people said, and I've got norton antivirus, which i have used to scan my computer and nothing has been found.

Is there anywhere i can download a new copy of notepad from to replace my old one?

Have you tried running an sfc scan? (go to start > run then type in "sfc /scannow" - without the quotes) you may need the windows xp cd and if you have service pack 2 you will need a service pack 2 disk.

Download Notepad.exe for XP from here

Download the file and unzip it first into the folder C:\WINDOWS\System32\dllcache (overwriting any existing copy), then into the folder it needs to go for your Windows version.
In your case that would be...
C:\WINDOWS and C:\WINDOWS\System32

I got to extract the file to C:\WINDOWS\System32\dllcache, but I can only get as far as C:\WINDOWS\System32. There is no dllcache file there....
