I have been trying to install microsoft office from my microsoft word 2000 cd rom but a window always pops up saying please make sure the transform paths are valid, duh what does that mean and where can I locate this particular path.

Check out this Microsoft article:

OFF2000: Error Message: Error Applying Transforms. Verify That the Specified Transform Paths Are Valid

I would first try resolution method 2 but backup your registry before deleting anything. To do this, in regedit, go to File > Export, give a location and filename and make sure Export Range is set to ALL.
