PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version:Win98SE
Problem Application Name & Version:
Problem Hardware Make & Model:Samsung 40gb hdd
Error Messages:

P-III   1000mhz  Asus M/B
I have a 40GB hdd on IDE1 as Master,I added a 2nd hdd 40GB on the same IDE1 as slave.
It shows at boot correctly, also shows up in the Device Manager correctly...no yellow exclamation mark!

It DOES not appear in Windows Explorer though.
I'm sure thats because its not fdisked or formatted.

Anybody know how I do this?
I'm going to be installing WinXP pro on this HDD if that makes a difference.

Any help would be appreciated.

You have 2 way of doing this.

The first one is by starting the installation of WinXP from a booteable cd and when it ask where to install it select the non-formatted disk and it will ask for you to format it giving two options, FAT and NTFS select the one you want(view the note below). Advice: Be careful to don't select the disk that you are using right now since you will lose all the info in it

The second one

  • If you have NT based OS, like 2000 or XP) is by right-clicking on My PC then left-clicking Manage and in the windows that opens click on the subkey of STORAGE called "Disk Management". After that right-click on the non-formated disk and choose Format. You must also mark it as an Active Partition.view the note below
  • If you have a non NT based OS, like 98, 98SE, ME) is by clicking Start-> Run and there you must write command and click OK. Then at the Command Console you have to write fdisk and press enter and follow the menus until you have an Active Partition on the disk you want, i don't remember if it does also format it or not, if not then when you are back at the console you have to write format [the drive leter] and press enter(this will format it in FAT32 if you want in NTFS write format /? for help on how to do this) view the note below

Selecting the File System: http://www.ntfs.com/ntfs_vs_fat.htm
