Operating System Version:Windows XP Professional
Problem Application Name & Version:Boot Disk
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:

Hello.  I have to format my computer today and I need to know if it's possible to make a boot disk on CD.  The reason I ask is because I don't have any high density 3 1/2 floppy disks.  What I did last time, is I had to install my old Windows 98 first before I could install Windows XP due to my lack of Windows XP boot disk!  Too much time wasted there though!

Thanks guys.

you don't need a boot floppy.
In the BIOS set the Boot Sequence to CD-Rom,insert the WinXP cd and boot!!
Just follow the instructions...
It will Partition and Format for you, then install XP!!

I can think of two circumstances where you may require a floppy
1) your CD (or BIOS) doesn't support booting
2) you have a System Restore-type Windows disk

In case 1) - use a Win98 or Win ME boot disk downloaded from, and start the SETUP.EXE program from the A:\> prompt - the setup will ask for a qualifying CD at the appropriate time, just insert the Win98 CD, and let it check, then follow the instructions.

In Case 2) there's not a lot you can do about the need to reinstall the original OS first to prove eligibility, AFAIK - which means having a Win98 floppy to hand.
