This is kind of a long story, so I appreciate your patience and any help you can lend. I'm sure the more details the better.



Some time back, I got DSL and a 2Wire modem/wireless router from SBC at home. I have two older home computers. I connected the one running Win98 to the 2Wire via its Ethernet connection and the one running Win98SE via its USB connection. The work laptop connects via WiFi B. All is good for months.



One day, the "Broadband" light on the 2Wire is red, and no computer can access the internet. SBC sends out a tech who replaces the 2Wire and shows me it works fine with his laptop. I had to tear my setup down in case he needed to get to the wall jack, so I didn't try it with any of mine right then.



When I got my computers hooked back up, neither of the Win98 machines can consistently access the internet. One or two clicks and "Page Not Found" or "Page Not Available", or whatever the error is. It's been a while, but it seems the Win XP machine worked ok, unless one of the others was on, and then it had the same problem.



I called the tech back out. He tried some things on the Win98 machines, which he said were acting funny, and then put his machine on the network and it reported a "generic trojan". I was very surprised, because I am very careful about viruses, but maybe my kid did it...



If I use dial-up, the win 98 machines can access the web fine (just slow!).



I run Norton AV 2004 Pro, Stinger, Housecall, McAfee Enterprise, all with up to date definitions and find nothing. I run Ad Aware and Spybot and find and fix a few things, but no change.



I contacted SBC tech support and they had me change a few browser settings, clear history, etc. No change.



I began an e-mail dialogue with 2Wire customer support. Because I could successfully ping the 2Wire and a website, but browse it, the recommended un-installing and re-installing Communications via Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup tab. I did this on both machines. Interestingly, the Wind98SE machine reported it could not find several files on the Win98SE CD, like secur32.dll and other dll's and vxd's and etc. The Win98 machine did not have any issues. Both machines seemed like they were fixed, but then the same stuff started happening.



The WinXP machines (now there are two) run just fine on WiFI and Ethernet whether or not one of the Win98 machines are on and connected.



2Wire, and stuff I found on the web, then suggested editing the winsock stuff in the registry. I found a program to do this here:

and ran it on only the Win98SE machine so far, with the same missing file results, and no change in internet access.

BTW, some other sympotoms: after a while there are many blank boxes on the taskbar along with the IE box,. and the Kernel CPU % in System Monitor shows 100% utilization...
