Hello all.  I have Windows XP on a 16 month old computer and got DSL a few months ago.  My internet connection is reasonable when I first get on line, but, if I stay on too long my system starts to go really slow.  Click... then 5 or 8 seconds later it will change to what I clicked on. This gradually gets worse and worse.  Eventually I have to shut down the computer because everything ends up locking up.  There are usually 2 or 3 programs that pop up and saying they are shutting down... i don't know what the heck they are??  It flashes on the screen too fast for me to read it.  Are people hacking into my system through my DSL and running random programs??  I ran ad aware and got rid of some junk but this still happens.  I'm pretty much a rookie at computer maintenance but this site helped me fix my cd rom a few months ago so I'm gaining some confidence. Wink

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Let me know if you need more info.  I see people copy and paste these big lists of stuff from their system... if you need to see that, tell me how to get to it and I will copy and paste it here.  (I said I was a rookie) Smiley

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Hi...
Would you please download Hijackthis---Important---Create a permanent
folder
EG---- Open MyDocuments----Right click an empty spot and select NEW---Folder----Name the new folder HJT ---this is where you will want to save Hijackthis too, also, backups will be stored there.
Download from here
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe
or here
http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe

Do a SCAN----Scan will change to SAVE LOG----copy and paste the WHOLE contents of the log
here... Don't try and fix anything yet----It is all important

Access your Add/Remove programs and Remove NewDotNet-- aka New.Net (Domains) if there and if you can

Set windows to Show Hidden Files and Folders
* Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Navigate to this file, I can find no info on it
C:\WINDOWS\System32\gjbawh.exe <--this file

Right click on it----properties---version
Do you know what it is related too?
Could you submit it to Kapersky's for a free virus scan
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
Simply use the Browse button to navigate to the file
Right click on it-----Select---Submit
I will assume it is bad for now!

Do another Scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries and then FIX CHECKED when ALL other windows are closed

Navigate to your temp directory and delete the contents
C:\Documents and Settings\Katie\Local Settings\Temp <--delete contents

RESTART your computer in Normal mode
CHECK FOR UPDATES with Ad-Aware
Set these additional options for a custom scan
click the gear wheel at the top and check these options:

General> activate these: "Automatically save log-file" and "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"

Scanning > activate these: "Scan within archives", "Scan active processes", "Scan registry", "Deep scan registry", "Scan my IE Favorites for banned sites" and "Scan my Hosts file"

Tweaks > Scanning Engine> activate this: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

Tweaks > Cleaning Engine: activate these: "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Click "Proceed" to save your settings, then click "Start", make sure "Activate in-depth scan" is ticked green then scan your system. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".

RESTART your computer again
You are controlling startup items with MSCONFIG
Not that there's nothing wrong with that, but you may be hiding

Go to Start>>>Run>>>type in "msconfig" without quotes
Do a Normal Startup
Restart your computer and rescan with hijackthis and post a fresh hijackthis log, thanks

Thanks for all of your help.  I did not delete C:\program files\se because it pulled up a huge list of things, some of which I know I use so I was scared to dump it.  Also, I started controlling my computer startup w/ msconfig because a bunch of random junk starts up when I turn on my computer and it literally takes about 5 minutes to start.  This way it starts much quicker.  Do you have any suggestions for that problem too??

Thanks again for your help!!!

Here is my new file after following your directions:

Is Ad-Aware right up to date?
If you open Ad-aware as of tonight---
You should see Ad-Aware 6.0
If you click on "details" the first 2 lines should read
Reference Number : 01R333 18.07.2004
Internal build : 265

You should also download and install Spybot S&D 1.3
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

After install---SEARCH FOR UPDATES

Check for problems----Fix Everything in RED
RESTART your computer and post back with another hijackthis log

I can't imagine what you could want in the "se folder"

Here's the entry you had in your log before
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Search-Exe] "C:\Program Files\se\v11\se.EXE" /H

Here's what it's related too.

I followed your previous directions.  I could not get to the adaware scan log like I usually do, I think this is the same thing, it's just listed a little bid different.  Hopefully it's right. Do I need to do anything else?  Thanks again for your help!!

Here's what your Ad-Aware logs tells me
Using reference-file :01R298 20.04.2004
It is outdated

Open Ad-Aware
CHECK FOR UPDATES
Download the updates
Do another custom Scan

Download spybot from the link I gave you
After installation---SEARCH FOR UPDATES
follow the procedure I gave you above

Post back with JUST a FRESH hijackthis log afterwards

Hey BenditUp or Cactus or anyone else who wants to help.  Sorry for the long time no post, my computer has been very uncooperative, I'm ready to throw it out the window!  Anyway, when I attempt to run ad aware, it comes up on my system very slowly, then I click "Check for updates" the little hand appears like it clicked it but doesn't go away and nothing happens, it freezes my whole system.  It freezes it so bad and so long that I had to kill the power to the whole system to get it to shut off.  I realize this is not a good thing but it was my only option.  Does turning the computer off like this harm it??  I've had to do it a few times due to ad aware. Anyway, should i download ad aware again?  Any advise appreciated.  Thanks again for all the help!
