When I try installing SP1 on my computer I get an error message saying that it can't install because "the file C:\Windows\System\System32\devices\atapi.sys is open or is in use by another program."
Operating System Version: WINDOWS XP pro
Problem Application Name & Version: ATAPI (or AT Attachment Packet Interface) I presume it's an I/O function and that there appears to be a conflict, because when I went to open the atapi.sys file in notepad I got a sharing violation.
Problem Hardware Make & Model: DELL
Error Messages: As above

Thanks for your help.  For a minute there my spirits lifted and I actually through there might be a solution to this problem.  I referenced the article and downloaded the necessary fixes, but I'm still getting the same issue.  There are a number of postings on that site complaining that these fixes don't work and Microsoft apparently is of no help.  One patch (the win 2000 server) won't install on my system at all (even tho I'm supposed to install it, according to Paula Sharick - the authot of the article), and the other one doesn't make any difference because I'm still getting the same message.  I've e-mailed Paul Sharick.  Who knows, maybe if she's in a good mood she'll answer me.  But even if she does, will it be the right answer?  Only the Shadow knows.Huh?
