I am looking for some advice on some good programs to prevent infections from these new spyware, adware, and malware programs.  I have norton antivirus, adware 6.0, spybot, and spyguard.  I was running spyguard but still got infected with the coolwebsearch "about:blank" spyware.  The spyguard alerted me of my homepage being changed and new files being put on my computer but I still got infected.  The adware and spybot work well but will not remove these hidden files after the infection has already occurred.

Are there better antispyware programs that run in the background and will protect me from these new infections?  I don't mind paying $30 for program like "spyware killer or spyware X-terminator" if it prevents me from having to reformat my harddive or having my identity stolen.  Are there programs that would prevent these hidden files from being installed on my computer?  Will norton firewall provide greater protection from spyware also?

Thanks - Mark

Hi Mark, I'm suspicious whether or not you have coolwebsearch infection
that has a hidden .dll, which must be removed
You say you got reinfected, I want to see if you may have not removed your infection or you may have been reinfected

SpywareGuard---together with SpywareBlaster----IE-Spyad
Keeping Windows updated---A good Anti-virus and having a firewall enabled
is good preventive medicine
Nothing comes with a 100% guarantee, but together they will come close

But first----Let's try to figure out what may be causing this

Could you please delete your copy of hijackthis and download the latest version
download from
HERE or HERE

Do a Scan and post a log

I seen your other log where about:blank may have been the problem
You identified this as the main cause
C:\WINDOWS\System32\hlpj.dll

Could you also follow these instructions

Copy the contents of the quote box to Notepad (START, run, enter NOTEPAD in the BOX and hit OK).
Now in Notepad select file, save as and enter in the filename box "Appinit.bat" (Use the quotes too) and save it on the desktop.

quote:
Reg save "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows" windows1.hiv
chkntfs c: > windows.txt
type windows1.hiv >> windows.txt

Double click on Appinit.bat
This will create a file on the desktop named windows.txt
Upload windows.txt in your next reply----Insert file attachmet

What OS are you using? XP Pro or Home
If your not sure go to Start----Run---type in "WINVER" without quotes

Could you also post the value from Registrar lite again, thanks

Hey benditup,  I ended up reformating my hard drive so I'm definitely clean now.  My concern is how to keep my computer from getting infected in the future.  I'm a novice when it comes to computers but the coolwebsearch "about:blank" spyware definitely keep coming back no matter how many times I ran adware, spybot, or cleaned my highjackthis log.

You successfully helped me clean my computer on my first infection.  I remember that after we removed a .dll file using registrarlite everything returned to normal.

I'm just wondering if there are antispyware software packages out there that will protect my computer better than the free software like spyguard.  The spyguard alerted me when I got infected for the second time but I believe another .dll file was placed on my computer anyways.  I fully understand that we will never be 100% protected these days but I'm convinced that it's worth spending a little money every year to make sure I stay clean.

You should install these 2 apps., they add extra security while
silently protecting you without running in the background

SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=53

With both, check for updates every couple of weeks

READ THIS
How did I get Infected
Make sure you check your activex controls as mentioned in that link

Make sure your Antivirus is up to date
If you don't run through a router---at minimal make sure that the XP
firewall is enabled

Safest, I believe, is to use a browser such as Mozilla Firefox
The wife likes her IE---so I make sure I have the 2 above programs installed----also check your activex settings as recommended by
that link to "How did I get Infected"

Take a look at Firefox----I love this browser---safer than IE too...
After installation you will want to install the Flash and Shockwave
plugins........
