Hey everyone I hope you can help me!
i am running Windows XP but my computer keeps shutting down, i am not sure if this is due to a virus or from a hardware fault. On startup I have done the following: start>run>shutdown -a. and also start>run>cmd>shutdown.exe -a but nothing stops it from shutting sdown, At first I assumed that I had sasser worm or blaster but I have run both online scans and my own virus scanner which both say I have no virus. I have downloaded and run symantecs fxsasser, a blaster fixer but it is still shutting down. I have checked the fan and power supply by swapping it with my other pc but it still does it. At my wits end please help
thanks

chickybabe:

when does the machine shut down? Right after you boot up or does it take a while (how long)? Does it happen consistently or intermittently?

To better diagnose heat problems (swapping fans is probably not adequate guarantee unless you are an expert), check the temperatures. Check your hardware setup utility for temperature settings of the motherboard and CPU. The temperature readings are usually under the hardware menu.

Has anyone tested the power supply?

If you are getting cool temperatures, and it is a software problem, have you checked all the things on this page:

Hey again
Machine usually takes 10-20 mins first boot, (say after overnight rest) then can take anywhere from 1 minute to 10 mins.
Can you tell me how to get into the bios to check temp?
Much appreciatd:-[
