Error Messages:

Hi all, need help bad. I just got my internet service back up and would you know after one day I keep getting a Norton alert saying I have a backdoor.trojan virus at ctl.dll. I ran Norton virus scan both in normal mode and safe mode but it does not find anything. How can this be it is the virus software that is tell me I have an infected file. My question is how do I get rid of this junk.  I have tried spyware and adware, several different types of software as well but it keeps coming back.  Any ideas!!! Should I delete this file or does it have some purpose??

Well I cant really help you, however I got the about:blank problem yesterday and started checking through a few system files.  ctl.dll  eob.dll and wdmjm.dll were all modified at the time I got it.

After trying a few sweep/cleaning tools without any luck clearing it (my homepage kept going to the CWS search page) I moved those 3 dll files to another directory and renamed them .dxx, then rebooted.
Now the problem seems to have gone.  Spy Sweeper cant find any problems, although Ad-aware does occasionally tell me that my about:blank could be a hijack attempt .... no specific details.

As for my system ....... all stable so far, without those 3 dll's. Not 100% confident its all fixed, but its looking much better.

I did a google search and found spyware/trojan references to ctl and wdmjm, but no results for eob.

I'll be following the threads on this board with interest !!!

Download CWShredder and save it to desktop
http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/10/17/10-17-150.shtml

Next: with only CWShredder open let it FIX all problems

RESTART your computer
Don't open a browser yet, instead access Internet Options via Control
Panel
Under the Programs tab "Reset Web Settings"
Under the General tab---Delete files + offline content---Also Reset home page.

I have tried both ideas:
When I tried to move the ctl.dll file to different folder is says access denied. I also tried the cwshredder and did what Cactus said but it seems to be still coming up. Any other ideas is greatly app.

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe
Why did you download an old copy of hijackthis?
You should have a copy in your ADWARE folder in MyDocuments

We won't remove anything with this version of hijackthis and until you
run it from a permanent folder

You can do this however, go to this address and remove NewDotNet from the instructions
http://www.newdotnet.com/#remove
Restart

Next:
Open up Notepad (START---RUN---type in "notepad" without quotes).
Copy the CONTENTS of the Quote box to notepad
Now in Notepad select file, save as and enter in the filename box "Appinit.bat" (Use the quotes too) and save it on the desktop.

quote:
Reg save "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows" windows1.hiv
chkntfs c: > windows.txt
type windows1.hiv >> windows.txt

Double click on Appinit.bat
This will create a file on the desktop named windows.txt
Upload windows.txt in your next reply----Insert file attachment

Next:Download FINDnFIX.exe

Double click to run FindnFix----It will Install to it's own folder
Find the folder and double-click on !LOG!.bat. Give it time to run and produce a log---- When done post the contents of Log.txt in this thread.
