PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: Win 98 - ver 1
Problem Application Name & Version: Win media player 7.01
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages: None

When I try to play a file smaller than about 10 MB there are no problems but with files any larger than this the sound still plays but the picture is frozen.

Can you give us your system specs...
Your CPU,Graphic card?

Have you tried installing a newer version?

My processor is PII 350 with 256 MB RAM and my video card is an ATI 3D Rage Pro.  The version of Windows Media Player (WMP 7.01) that I have is newer than the one on the above link (it is WMP 6.4 on that link.)
