PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: WindowsXP
Problem Application Name & Version:
Problem Hardware Make & Model: Dell Dimension 4500
Error Messages:

Ok, so a couple of weeks ago my homepage started changing by itself and IE windows would open by themselves.  So I decided to get SpySweeper to fix the problem.  SpySweeper did fix the problem and it prevents them from happening again but it kind of just holds the adware back, it doesn't completely fix it.  Whenever I startup my computer and I run the SpySweeper scan it always finds Drsnsrch.com and CWS-AboutBlank.  Is there a way to permanetly get ride of these.  I also have CWShredder.  Thanks for any help provided.  Oh and I'm kinda a rookie with programming and stuff.  I have included the hijackthis log below but I only knew to do that from some of the other posts.

Access your Add/Remove programs via Control Panel and Remove
Spykiller---It's bogus

Download and Install the free version of Ad-Aware
After Install---CHECK FOR UPDATES
We'll run this later

Set windows to show hidden files and folders
* Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Navigate to this file, I can find no info on it
C:\WINDOWS\System32\lrtuavw.exe <--this file

Right click on it----properties---version
Do you know what it is related too?
Could you submit it to Kapersky's for a free virus scan
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
Simply use the Browse button to navigate to the file
Right click on it-----Select---Submit
I will assume it is bad for now!

Disconnect completely from the Internet---ensure you update Ad-Aware
beforehand

Enter your task manager (Hold down CTRL+SHIFT and tap the ESC key)
End process on this
lrtuavw.exe

Do another Scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries and then FIX CHECKED when ALL other windows are closed

The next ones are optional, but I would fix them, they are not needed on startup, the programs work fine without them
They are considered Resource hogs

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE

Find and delete these files and folders if they exist
C:\WINDOWS\System32\lrtuavw.exe <---this file
C:\Program Files\SpyKiller <--this folder

Navigate to this folder
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\
Open it
RENAME realsched.exe>>>>>realsched.exe.old

RESTART your computer in Normal mode
Stay disconnected from the NET
Open Ad-Aware and set these additional options for a custom scan
click the gear wheel at the top and check these options:

General> activate these: "Automatically save log-file" and "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"

Scanning > activate these: "Scan within archives", "Scan active processes", "Scan registry", "Deep scan registry", "Scan my IE Favorites for banned sites" and "Scan my Hosts file"

Tweaks > Scanning Engine> activate this: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

Tweaks > Cleaning Engine: activate these: "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Click "Proceed" to save your settings, then click "Start", make sure "Activate in-depth scan" is ticked green then scan your system. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".

RESTART your computer again
Don't open a browser yet, instead access Internet Options via Control
Panel
Under the Programs tab "Reset Web Settings"
Under the General tab---Delete files + offline content---Also Reset home page
Do a Disk Cleanup >>>Start---Run---type in "cleanmgr" without quotes

Post back with a Fresh hijackthis log and let me know how your doing

Ok I followed those insructions.  Spykiller wasn't in the add/remove programs thing and nothing came up on the virus scan for that other file.  Also Disk Cleanup doesn't make it all the way through the scan on my computer.  It doesn't get passed "compressing old files".  It hasn't worked since a few weeks after I got my computer, which was about 3 years ago.  Below is the Hijackthis log.  Some of that stuff you said to fix came back I think.

We'll tackle your problems with Disk Cleanup once your clean

Ensure your version of CWShredder is 1.59.1 or later

Set windows to show hidden files and folders,if you still have them shown, go back and check the one I have bolded
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

RESTART your computer back in Safe Mode
Navigate to these TEMP folders and delete the whole contents, including subfolders but NOT the Temp directories themselves

# C:\Windows\Temp\
# C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
# C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
# C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
# C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
# Empty your "Recycle Bin"

While still in safe mode
Do another Scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries
and then FIX CHECKED when ALL other windows are closed

Next with just CWShredder open let it FIX all problems

RESTART in Normal mode
RESET your home page if required in Internet options before you open your browser

Post back with a fresh hijackthis log
Could you also
Copy the contents of the quote box to Notepad (START, run, enter NOTEPAD in the BOX and hit OK).
Now in Notepad select file, save as and enter in the filename box "Appinit.bat" (Use the quotes too) and save it on the desktop.

quote:
Reg save "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows" windows1.hiv
chkntfs c: > windows.txt
type windows1.hiv >> windows.txt

Double click on Appinit.bat
This will create a file on the desktop named windows.txt
Upload windows.txt in your next reply----"Insert file attachment"

Ok I tried to delete all the files in

# C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

but 3 files would not delete "sports.yahoo[1]." "show[1]." and "nba[1]."
These files were all located in seperate folders located in the folder of "Content.IE5"
When I tried to delete these I got the error message "Cannot delete file: Cannot read from source file or disk."

Also when I tried to delete all the files in

# C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\

only one file remained.  Here it is, the name is quite long

"TR_Popunder;kw=nissan+skyline;pos=1;sz=720x300;tile=1;!category=gaming;!category=tobacco;!
category=adult;!category=s*xualovertones;211774287711350[1].htm"

When I tried to delete this file nothing happened, I did not get an error message or anything.

Set Windows to Show Hidden Files and Folder

This next part will cause your computer to RESTART---Allow it!

In the keys1 folder, double click on FIX.bat.
There will be an alert of about 15 seconds before reboot
After you restart, open Explorer and navigate to
C:\Windows\System32 folder
Find the KBDA.DLL file (it should be visible now). Highlight the file and using top menu, click Edit>>>>>Move to folder...

Select C:\Findnfix\junkxxx as destination. Move the file.

Open the FINDnFIX folder again and double-click on RESTORE.bat.
When it is finished, in the FINDnFIX folder, there will be a file called Log2.txt - post it's contents in your next reply.

Open the FINDnFIX folder again and open the Files2 folder. Double-click on the ZIPZAP.bat.
It will quickly clean the rest and will make a copy of the bad file(s) in the same folder (junkxxx.zip)
It will open your email client with instructions. Simply drag and drop the junkxxx.zip file from the folder into the mail message and submit to the specified addresses.
If you email you will have to link to this thread

RESTART your computer and delete the whole FINDnFIX folder and files

Next: Go to Start>>>>Run>>>type in "%temp%" without quotes
delete the whole contents of the temp folder

Ensure you have the latest CWShredder 1.59.1 or later
Open it and let it FIX all problems
RESTART your computer

Do another custom Scan with AD-Aware---again restart
Access your Internet Options and Reset home page if necessary

If you have any trouble deleting the folder and files
Try this link----you shouldn't have troubles from info on the log...
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421&sd=tech

Post back one more hijackthis log for a final cleaning

Ok I'm at the part "delete the whole contents of the temp folder" and 1 file remains.

"Perflib_Perfdata_560.dat"

When I try to delete it I get the error message

"Cannot delete Perflib_Perfdata_560: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again."

So I went to the link in your last post and went into safe mode to follow the insructions on that page, but then in safe mode when I type %temp% and the window comes up the file is not there so I can't change the ownership or whatever.

Were you able to delete the FINDnFix folder?

Don't worry about Perflib_Perfdata, it will be there every time you start in normal mode, related too Performance monitor
Did you carry out the requests to run CWShredder and Ad-Aware?

Do another Scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries
and then FIX CHECKED when ALL other windows are closed
