PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: Windows XP Professional
Problem Application Name & Version:
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:

My computer has also been infected with the "about:blank" spyware.  But the homepage has changed and instead of "about:blank" it now reads "res://hgdqs.dll/index.html#96676"
I'm seeing the same problems everyone else has experiences with my computer (slow performance and "low on virtual memory" message).
I downloaded Hijack This and did a scan. Here is the result:

You may have more than one infection, this may take a little work
so try and follow along as close as you can

Download the tool about:Buster created by Rubber Ducky. http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip

Unzip it to the desktop, DON'T run it yet

Next step:

Copy the contents of the quote box to Notepad (START, run, enter NOTEPAD in the BOX and hit OK).
Now in Notepad select file, save as and enter in the filename box "Appinit.bat" (Use the quotes too) and save it on the desktop.

quote:
Reg save "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows" windows1.hiv
chkntfs c: > windows.txt
type windows1.hiv >> windows.txt

We'll work with this later

Disconnect completely from the Internet
IMPORTANT
RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE

Enter your Task Manager and ensure none of these are still running
(Hold down the CTRL+SHIFT and tap the ESC key)
apiir.exe
aacrhdv.exe
netka32.exe

Do another Scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries
and then FIX CHECKED when ALL other windows are closed

After you FIX CHECKED close hijackthis
While still in safe mode

Double click aboutbuster, click OK, click Start, then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them.
Save the log

Run aboutbuster again--save log

Still in safe mode set windows to show hidden files and folders
* Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Click Yes to confirm.

Navigate to your TEMP folders and delete the whole contents including
subfolders, buy NOT the Temp directories
# C:\Windows\Temp\

# C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
# C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
# C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\

RESTART back in Normal Mode--stay disconnected from the NET
Open Ad-Aware and set these additional options for a custom scan
click the gear wheel at the top and check these options:

General> activate these: "Automatically save log-file" and "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"

Scanning > activate these: "Scan within archives", "Scan active processes", "Scan registry", "Deep scan registry", "Scan my IE Favorites for banned sites" and "Scan my Hosts file"

Tweaks > Scanning Engine> activate this: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

Tweaks > Cleaning Engine: activate these: "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Click "Proceed" to save your settings, then click "Start", make sure "Activate in-depth scan" is ticked green then scan your system. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".

RESTART your computer one more time
Don't open a browser yet, instead access Internet Options via Control
Panel
Under the Programs tab "Reset Web Settings"
Under the General tab---Delete files + offline content---Also Reset home page

Double click on Appinit.bat on the desktop
This will create a file on the desktop named windows.txt
Upload windows.txt in your next reply----"Insert file attachment"

Post back with a fresh hijackthis log and about:buster logs

Ok, when I try to run About:Buster, it gets about 27% of the way through then it displays this message:

About:Buster will now shut explorer.exe down to remove C:\WINDOWS\System32\hlpf.dll.  Do not worry if your task bar disappears for a moment. Will You allow About:Buster to shut down explorer.exe and restart it?

Whether you choose "Yes" or "No", it says there was an error while trying to delete hlpf.dll and it won't go any further.  How on earth do I get around this?  Could I delete hlpf.dll manually?

Are you running in safe mode? Best if you would
try deleting the file
you may want to delete your copy of about:buster and try this one
Maybe the download was bad

http://tools.zerosrealm.com/AboutBuster.zip

Could you post back another hijackthis log afterwards,
Follow all the other instructions

I'm in safemode.  When I try to delete the file, it says access denied and that the file may be in use.  I tried downloading the other About:Buster, same thing happened.

Make sure you shut down all other windows when running the tool---especially any browser window
Enter your task manager and shut down any process that is unneeded

Go to START===RUN===type in "services.msc" without quotes
Scroll down and find the service called "Network Security Service".
If you see it
double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK and close any open windows.

Then try and run about:buster again

Please complete the rest of the instructions and post back a new hijackthis log
I'll consider you are just keeping me updated until I see another log
