Hi....I am using an HP Pavilion PC with Windows ME. Recently I have been experiencing MAJOR problems with my PC. When I try to 'explore' a folder on my desktop or any folder for that matter, I recieve one of 5 error messages. messages like
"Explorer has caused an error in SHELL32.DLL. Explorer will now close."
"Explorer has caused an error in SHDOCVW.DLL. Explorer will now close."
and
"Explorer has caused an error in <unknown.> Explorer will now close."
I would type up all five, but last time I tried to do that my computer freaked out and closed my internet explorer and wouldn't open it again. Rarely, the
folder opens and everything works, but this is rare. I have run a virus scan several times, and it always comes up with nothing. WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY COMPUTER?!?! Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.....thank you!!

Try this:

To resolve the issue, change the Shell= line in the System.ini file to Shell=explorer.exe. To do this, use the following steps:
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Notepad.
On the File menu, click Open.
In the File name box, type c:\windows\system.ini, and then click Open.
Click Search, and then click Find.
In the Find what box, type shell=, and then click Find Next.
Type a semi-colon (Wink at the beginning of the Shell= line, and then create a new line.
On the new line, type shell=explorer.exe, click Save on the File menu.
Restart your computer. Click No if you receive the following prompt:
Your system shell has changed. The Compaq software will work with your new shell, but the new shell will not work with your Compaq software. Do you want to keep your Compaq software working?

Or this:

A lot of Explorer and Iexplore errors can be down to poorly written software

First of all download the following programmes:
1.CWShredder
2.Spybot
3.Adaware

Run Program 1 and have it fix anything it finds,
then Update 2 & 3, then run both programmes and have them fix anything they find.

When you have run and fixed everything with Spybot Search and Destroy and AdAware, please reboot after scanning, as not everything can be removed when Windows is running

Go to this page, and download 'Hijack This!'.

Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Unzip HijackThis into this folder. When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary. Please delete the old copy so it can't be used

Launch Hijack This, then press Scan, and press Save Log

This will generate a text file that will list all running processes, all applications that are loaded automatically when you start Windows, and more.

open that file
Go to Edit | Select all
Now click Edit | copy to copy it

Do not change anything just yet
Come back to the forum, Right Click and paste its contents here

Someone will come along and have a look at it, and advise you what still needs to be removed.

On your desktop, right click on Internet Explorer and select Properties.
Click on the Advanced Tab. Untick the box which states "Enable third-party browser extensions". You must then restart your machine (although it may do this automatically).
Let me know whether this works.

Many thanks,
Stuart
