Recently my wife uninstalled xp and put windows 98 on a neighbours computer.Everything works fine except the ethernet card is not found(does not show up in device manager nor is found on reboot).I had her hook up the dsl modem via usb.Now everything still works fine however as soon as the modem is powered up the computer freezes. She would like to get the ethernet card working again or just get the modem to work via usb.Any suggestions appreciated.

Has she tried to remove the NIC and reseat it, then see if it is picked up when the computer boots? Has she considered it might be broken?

Okay, so she says she uninstalled XP? Was it an upgrade over Windows 98?

So she uninstalled Windows XP and got back to Windows 98? As far as I know, Windows XP will ask during the upgrade if you want to convert the FAT32 partition to NTFS. When you uninstall Windows XP this won't be reverted, yet Windows 98 cannot live on, read or write to NTFS, so I wonder what has happened.

Has your wife repartitioned & reformatted the system?

If the reversal went without any problems, did she reinstall the motherboard drivers? Did she install drivers for the NIC?
