PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version:
Problem Application Name & Version:windows 98 2nd edition
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:

I have just installed windows 98 2nd ed. on a totally empty hard drive, apparently it didnt install everything as a lot of dll files are missing (if not all).Me not knowing what will be affected performance wise I have run across some problems.
I would like to know how to get the missing files(note: this puter in question has no internet access and is not desired but I do have one that has access)But I am thinking a complete reinstallation of 98 may be needed unless somehow they can be salvaged.

Unless you know what files are missing, you can't Wayne. Else you could use the Windows Expand option. Check the Windows Help on that function and where to find it.

Although you can try the system file checker option. It should reinstall that what it finds bad and that what it finds missing.

Sort of good news,,I reinstalled windows 98 overtop of the original installation, seems all files are now present as no more pop-ups saying such and such is missing.
Only one problem remains and that is I cannot select 256 colors in my display settings,,only can get 2 or 16 colors which greatly restricts.Tried changing different adapters such as supervga but wont work,(wrong driver message) I have been messing with it for a few hours now reading help files and trying things but no luck,,need help I guess.

Hey wayne1721...what's the Make and Model of your Video Card?
When you go into Device Manager are there any beside the Vid Card entry?

Try uninstalling it from the Device Manager completly, then reboot see if Win98 detects it and loads the drivers.

As I said in my answer PM to you: To be able to run at least 256 colours, the videocard (or onboard videochip) should have at least 1MB of memory. So in your case, make sure that there's enough memory bound to the videochip. You can do this in the BIOS of the motherboard.

Then first and foremost install the motherboard drivers (if applicable) before you install the videocard drivers. It being a videochip doesn't mean it doesn't need drivers.
You can try to install the Windows standard VGA or SVGA drivers.

When windows booted up for the first time,it found and loaded the drivers for the monitor and display adapter,I tried changing the adapter to different types and at one time had one where 256 colors was selectable (super vga)but when I did select 256 after the driver was loaded and it said to restart, after it did it reverted to 16 colors on its own (I forget what the error message was about it) but I still cannot get 256. This is the only thing after two weeks of farting around that is holding me back after solving several other problems (dang computers anyway) lol
