PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version:  Windows XP
Problem Application Name & Version:  IE 6.0 and SBC Yahoo Browser
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:

I was hoping you folks could give me a hand with this extremely annoying Adware problem.

I have been having many of the other issues I have seen in other threads with this Adware.MainSearch program.  Having my default homepage reverted to about:blank, getting slammed with "you are infected with Spyware" pop-ups when I try to access my Yahoo email which in turns sends me to about:blank without allowing me to retrieve my mail, couldn't even get to Microsoft's download site for Windows XP and IE 6.0 patches due to getting bounced to about:blank, etc...  Very frustrating!

Norton AntiVirus has been unable to eliminate this threat (as well as my Adware.Ipinsight).  I'm not concerned yet with the Adware.Ipinsight as from what I've read, this was loaded onto my machine when I ran the SBC Yahoo Install disc.  But back to trying to eliminate the Adware.MainSearch.

I ran a battery of softwares last night to try to eliminate it.  Started with Spybot 1.3, then ran Ad Aware, then Spywareblaster, and then finally Trojan Hunter.

Ran the scans on these softwares several times.  Since I ran Trojan Hunter last (to eliminate Trojan.ByteVirus), I re-ran the battery of Spybot/Ad Aware/Spywareblaster thinking that the Trojan may also be adding some of these damn Adware files.

Even followed Symantec's advice; updated Norton, disabled restore, restarted PC in safe mode (simple restart and not a power off and wait 30 seconds), ran Norton Full system scan, deleted any caught files, and restarted in regular mode (simple restart and not a power off and wait 30 seconds).  Thinking it couldn't hurt, I even ran Spybot/Ad Aware/Spyblaster/Trojan Hunter again.  Right before bed I ran a Norton full system scan and there were two which couldn't be deleted:  Adware.Ipinsights and Adware.MainSearch.

Since I think uninstalling SBC Yahoo and just installing EnterNet 300 will eliminate the Adware.Ipinsights, I only am going to concerm myself with Adware.MainSearch.

What is my next steps(s)?  What sorts of additional info do you need from me to diagnose and squash this pest?  What sorts of additional software will I need to install to make your diagnosis easier (i.e. CW Shredder, HijackThis, etc.)?  What sorts of info shall I return to you so that it is precisely what you are looking for the FIRST time so I don't annoy you (i.e. let me know "run x, then run y, and post z to us").  I can't thank you enough in advance for your help.  It is bad enough that my wife knows that I may have stumbled upon some *ahem* questionable sites.  =)

If this latest bit may help.  Norton last evening pointed to file c:\windows\madopew.dll as the source of Adware.MainSearch.  This morning it pointed to a different file:  c:\documents and settings\administrator\local settings\temp\temp.fr4318.  I have not connected to the Internet between last night and this morning.

Thanks again kind souls!!!

Please Download Hijack This

http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/

Make sure you unzip hijack this to its own folder such as C:\Program files as this is where the backups will be created.Run Hijack this but do NOT fix anything.Click save log and a log will open in notepad.Copy and paste your log here.

Thank you so much jvic!

I will start the logging as soon as I get home this evening and will post my first log into this topic.  I can't wait to reclaim my browser!

I assume I should just use the default settings of Hijack This when I run it?

Read a few other forum topics and am thinking I may have screwed up by logging off of DSL and powering off the PC. Please let me know if you need a fresh log and if I should be keeping my PC on and connected to the Internet. As you can tell this is my first time doing this.
