Can anyone help? Problem I have manifests itself as My Documents browser page opening every time pc is started up. Various searches suggest this is caused by a malaware and is associated with "wsaupdater.exe" - which I see is showing up on attached Hijack this log.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Please download and run the following programs:

AD-AWARE

Go here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
and download Ad-Aware SE Personal

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the bottom right-hand corner of the main window click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

Then, in the main window: Click Start and under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Then, deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

To start the scan, click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and then click Next)

Restart your computer.

SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY

http://majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

Open Spybot Search & Destroy (Click Start, Programs, Spybot S&D (Advanced Mode). Click online, Search for updates, Download all available updates. Close all Browser windows, Click ''Check for Problems''. Anything that needs to be fixed it will show in red and have a green check in the box to the left. Click ''Fix Selected Problems'', Then restart your computer.

Then run Hijack this again and post back with a new log

Hi Jvic,
Apologies for not mentioning but have already run Adaware and Spybot. The log posted in previous post is after a full Adaware scan (with all objects found deleted) and a Spybot scan with all problems corrected.

Thanks for reply. While you were offline, have done some more searching around on previous topics and found this reference to WSAUPDATER.EXE in a post by Benditup:

"Look for these entries on your computer
C:\Windows\System32\wsaupdater.exe <--this file
C:\Program Files\WindowsSA\omniscient.exe <---this file
If you find them you will want to delete
wsaupdater.exe file
and the WindowsSA folder
in Safe Mode"

Have done a search and WSAUPDATER shows on a search in both C:\WINDOWS\system32 and C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch.

Can't find any trace of the WindowsSA folder or omniscient.exe.

A quick check in the registry suggests the original Userinit file has been replaced by one which now reads:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C\Windows\System32\wsaupdater.exe,

Hope this additional information is of some help. Will not take any action to delete wsaupdater.exe until I have your advice.

Also notice that when I use internet what look like looks like an active browser page shows up at bottom of screen with address:
http://xads.offeroptimizer.com
When I click on it nothing happens, and suspect this is associated with the WSAUPDATER issue.

Many thanks
Cooler1

It may be relevant that when I run Adaware the scan invariably find around 20 objects most of which are associated with the Vendor VX2. I've tried running the Adaware VX2 cleaner tool, but it says system is clean.
Hope these pieces of information help.

Can you post a Fresh hijackthis log please
If you haven't downloaded the latest version of Ad-Aware please uninstall
your version and download Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.04
Check for updates and do a Full System Scan--Remove all critical objects
Restart your computer to finish the cleaning

Then post back a fresh hijackthis log
The link to the newest ad-aware can be found in jvic's link
or you can download it from HERE

Have downloaded Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.04, carried out a full scan and deleted all critical objects. (Problem I've spotted however is that every time I reboot the critical objects I've just deleted seem to re-appear.) However, have followed your instructions and new HJT log is as follows:
