PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:

Operating System Version: WindowsXP-SP1

Problem Application Name & Version:

- SearchMiracle was coming up as default search window: undesired
- It was also creating a bunch of links to text within HTML pages that send you back to searchmiracle: undesired
- It appeared to be the cause of *many* popup windows advertising casinos, etc: very undesired
 - Finally, the "elitebar" toolbar appeared in IE5 tool bar area

I didn't follow good judgment: I used HJT (first time user) and repeated attempted to Fix various EliteBar and SearchMiracle entries without guidance.  I succeeded in removing the EliteBar, but not the incessant popup windows.

Any ideas?  This SearchMiracle/EliteBar thing is simply a disappointment to mankind.

HJT log follows:

Well, we will try and work with what I can see

Set Windows to Show Hidden Files and Folders

Access your Add/Remove Programs and see if there is an entry for
Elitebar Internet Explorer Toolbar
Try and remove it if it's there

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE

Find and delete these files if they exist
C:\windows\system32\winhdv32.exe <--this file
C:\windows\system32\windbt32.exe <--this file

In safe mode
Do another Scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries
and then FIX CHECKED when ALL other windows are closed

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Sys29] C:\windows\system32\winhdv32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SysA] C:\windows\system32\windbt32.exe

Optionally, fix the next ones too, they are NOT needed on startup
and use unnecessary system resources

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightLAN 01] "C:\Program Files\Verizon Online\Visual IP InSight\IPClient.exe" -l
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightMonitor 01] "C:\Program Files\Verizon Online\Visual IP InSight\IPMon32.exe"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe

RESTART back in Normal mode
Download and Install the free version of Ad-Aware
After installation-CHECK FOR UPDATES
Do a Full system scan----Remove All Critical objects
RESTART your computer to finish the cleaning process

Post back with a Fresh hijackthis log

Fantastic, things are looking good.  You are prompt, accurate, and kind - thank you.  Before I post the new HJT log, a few things:

1 - I found/deleted winhdv32.exe but notwindbt32.exe, as the latter file "disappeared" from the system32 directory

2 - a little adventurous: during several past reboots and checks, I noticed these "win???32.exe" files appearing, all with dates of 8/19/2001, 7:30AM, 13KB.  When the 2nd .exe above was not found, I did search around and spotted two NEW .exe's (winyfg32.exe and winjww32.exe), both fitting the time/date stamp and file size.  I delete these (with a deep breath).  They fit the "win???32.exe" profile along with a date/size stamp that appears to signify these rogue files.

3 - both "O4's" to the two original exe files were found by HJT (even though the 2nd exe was no longer in the /system32 folder).  I let HJT Fix them both.

Things appear to be clean.  New HJT follows:

Thanks for the info Don, they definitely looked like the bad guys
Almost 99.9% positive they were Smiley
I hope that .1%  doesn't come back to bite me in the a**

You should install these 2 apps., they add extra security while
silently protecting you, without running in the background

SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=53
Download link==https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm#IESPYAD
Scroll down and click on IE-SPYAD.EXE Free!

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks

Stay safe Smiley

One thing I forgot to mention, if everything is running good you should flush out your Restore Points
Simply Disable System Restore--RESTART--enable system Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm

I missed one Don, again not an immediate threat, just a resource hog
Programs work fine without it, you can have hijackthis fix it....
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
Here's some info
