PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: Windows XP Home
Problem Application Name & Version: Pentium 3
Problem Hardware Make & Model: Gateway Solo 9550
Error Messages:

Here's the prob...my screen is dark! i never changed any settings...just all of the sudden my screen turns VERY dark to the point where i can barely see my desktop. i've tried restarting my computer several times...i even did a system restore, and still nada. but when i hold down my "Fn" key and my "F3" key (the Fn F3 key says LCD/CRT), my screen goes back to being bright and normal for like 3 seconds...then back to darkness. Is this a virus??? was there a hotkey i accidentally pushed to make my screen this way? please help...

thanks for your time and patience.

Is this when you're using the battery or also when you're on normal power?
Have you considered it is the LCD screen that may be dying? (I hope not for you, for the replacements are expensive).

To test if it is the videochip on board, can you hook up to an external monitor, then press Fn + F3?

Hello J...

its not funning on battery, its plugged in. i'd think that if it was dying...it would be totally dark, no? unfortunately i dont have an extra monitor i can hook up. i think this happened to me a while ago and the problem just went away...but its been like this all weekend and its freaking me out.

If it was totally dark, I'd call that dead, not dying. Wink

You could have it looked at by a local PCshop though. They have the equipment to test if it is the LCD screen plus they can easily test it on an external monitor.
