PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: Windows XP
Problem Application Name & Version: Internet Explorer 6.0
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:

Hello All
Hoping you guys can shed some light on the horrific problems I'm experiencing at ther moment.
Recently fell foul of the about:blank spyware which I think downloaded itself whilst I went without firewall protection between updating from Norton Internet Security 2003 to 2004 version.
When I finally got the new version running (loads of installation problems) I ran a full virus scan and it found 59 adware/spyware problems but couldn't delete any of them!!
To try and sort it out I downloaded and ran AOL Spyware Protection which did delete what it found (not as much as Norton Anti Virus)and seems to have got rid of about:blank, but in doing so I think its wrecked some of my .dll files.
I can't access any internet systems, system restore, or any of the pc help data-bases. Whenever I try to open the applications I get the following error message:
"Internet Explorer (etc) has encountered a problem and needs to close, we are sorry for the inconvenience" etc
Within the error details it always contains - mod name mshtml.dll
I have tried the following so far, but no success:
Re-installed AOL
Deleted all cookies, temp internet files
Ran winsockxpfix.exe
Un-installed AOL Spyware Protection
I've also re-registered the following dll files:
mshtml.dd, actprxy.dll, oleaut32.dll, shell32.dll, shadocvw.dll, msjava.dll, browseui.dll - All registered successfully except shdodc.dll which I got the following message:
"shdodc.dll was loaded, but the dll register server entry point was not found. This file can not be registered"
I don't know if its this .dll file which is causing the problems and don't know how else to re-register it.
The biggest problem about this is not having any internet access so I'm unable to download any of the software thats been recommended in other threads e.g - adaware, cwshedder, or hijackthis etc
Any help would be really appreciated. I've searched the existing threads for anyone with a similar problem but found nothing.

Please download Hijack This

http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/

Make sure you unzip hijack this to its own folder such as C:Program files as this is where the backups will be created.Run Hijack this but do NOT fix anything.Click save log and a log will open in notepad.Copy and paste your log here.

You have some real doozies here.Is there a way you can download these programs to disk from another computer.
AD-AWARE

Go here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
and download Ad-Aware SE Personal

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the bottom right-hand corner of the main window click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

Then, in the main window: Click Start and under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Then, deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

To start the scan, click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and then click Next)

Restart your computer.

SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY

http://majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

Open Spybot Search & Destroy (Click Start, Programs, Spybot S&D (Advanced Mode). Click online, Search for updates, Download all available updates. Close all Browser windows, Click ''Check for Problems''. Anything that needs to be fixed it will show in red and have a green check in the box to the left. Click ''Fix Selected Problems'', Then restart your computer and post a new hijack this log.

Hello

Downloaded and ran adaware & spybot and deleted log entries you highlighted previously from previous HJT log. Hopefully the log below looks a little more promising (still don't have any internet access)

Thanks fot your help so far.

Hi Jvic

Followed your latest instructions:

Couldn't use add/remove on webrebates - i got the following msg:
"An error occurred while trying to remove WebRebates (by TopRebates.com). It may have already been unintalled"

Fixed entries in HJT that you noted, and deleted prxqwcyx.exe & chkntfs.exe in safe mode, but couldn't find any web_rebates entries in program files (or elsewhere).

Good news is I have internet access again - hurrah! And the about:blank seems to have gone (homepage not being hijacked anyway). I think my Norton Internet Security setting are a little screwed though as I can only download pages by turning off the firewall?!

Posted the latest HJT log below.
Thanks for all your help - I feel like I might be seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

Hello

Latest HJT log after deleting osrr.exe & rebooting below.

Not having anymore internet or hijack problems but pc is still VERY slow on start-up and seems to be running alot of programs in the background. Checking Task Manager's processes running log, theres a few that don't seem to be related to genuine programs e.g. -
wmiprvse.exe
CalCheck.exe
backweb-444836
ctfmon.exe

Not sure if I'm just getting really paranoid, or if theres more to hunt out. What do you guys think???

Nothing malicious left in your log, but you could disable startup entries
such as backweb and OSA9.exe
They don't need to be running on startup

Try downloading this small utility, it a great little startup controller
Starter 5.6.1.38

Use these links to track down what you don't need running on startup
Don't go crazy and disable everything, do some investigating
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm
http://www.windowsstartup.com/wso/search.php

Well your at it you may want to Navigate to this folder
C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
Delete the Whole contents of Prefetch, but DON'T delete Prefetch itself

You may also want to Restart in safe mode and delete the Whole contents of these folders
You will have to Show Hidden Files and Folders
# C:\Windows\Temp\
# C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
# C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
# C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
# C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\

While your in Safe mode why don't you do a Disk Defragmenter
START>>>All Programs>>>Accessories>>System Tools>>>Disk Defrag
You might want to do the above once a month or so...

Do the above and post back how everythings running

A couple more things to try also, as I said your log looks clean
Just to make sure
===Create a New folder on your desktop, call it Aboutbuster
Download to desktop About:Buster
by RubbeR Ducky

Run About:buster you unzipped
===Start About:Buster and hit ok.   Now for the scanning part. Hit Start and then Ok. The program should start scanning.Scan a Second time. Then hit exit
RESTART your computer
Run About:Buster again

Could you also Download GetServices.zip
Unzip it to a folder
Double click on the Getservice.bat file to run it. This will create and open a text file named getservice.txt in the same folder.
getservice.txt will list all active Services

Please attach it in your reply, Simply click the "Insert File Attachment" below the reply box
Browse to getservice.txt---Right click on it and Select it
Click the Upload File

Post back with About:Buster log and upload the Getservices.txt
