Try formatting your hard drive with a Windows 98 Startup disk and then Boot your computer with the Windows XP CD-Rom and run Setup again.

If you don't have a Windows 98 Startup disk you can get one from :

What is the Error Message that you keep getting ?.

Your Windows XP CD-Rom could have been damaged during the power interruption.

Try and borrow another Windows XP CD-Rom.
If you can't then there is  the option to run Setup using Microsoft Setup disks. These are six 1.44 Mb. floppy disks that have the setup files on them to get you started. But you will still need windows XP CD-Rom.

You can download the Windows XP Home Edition Setup disk from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8fe6868-6e4f-471c-b455-bd5afee126d8&DisplayLang=en

You will need six new or formatted floppy disks.
Follow the instruction to download and run the program.

There are several messages that come up together in a box all saying something about a catalogue.

Well, that didn't work. Can anyone advise how to clean a hard drive?

Clean install Windows XP: http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm

Btw, the problem you have with not being able to format the drive is because it is NTFS, which Windows 98's DOS bootdisk & format command won't be able to work with.

Use the above How to and it'll be all fine.
