Operating System Version: Windows XP SP2
Problem Hardware Make & Model: Toshiba Satellite A35-159

I have run Ad-aware 6, Spybot, CWShredder, Norton, AOL, and HijackThis.  I've updated them all as of yesterday.

CWShredder tells me that it is CWS.Searchx.  It will repair it but it keeps on returning after a period of time.  Sometimes short, sometimes the next day.  Any help will be appreciated.

Here is the HijackThis log...

Upon futher review...

When I go to a webpage that forces the Dial-up Connection dialog box that causes the page to change, on the pop-up and as I exit from that.

A couple entries in your log can be removed
I would access your Add/Remove Programs and Remove
ViewPoint Manager and then RESTART your computer

Can you Download DLLCompare

Start the Program and click the Run Locate.com
Default settings should work---C:\Windows\System32 directory
Let it complete the SCAN, which won't take long

Click the Compare button to start the next process. This will take a bit longer.
The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist'.
Files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'.
Very few files should be listed in the lower pane,if any, when the Compare scan is complete.
Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Click the Make a Log of what was found button

If a file is found with DLLCOMPARE, let me know what version of XP your running, HOME OR PRO
If your not sure go to Start----Run---type in "WINVER" without quotes

The next time this hijacker hits, don't try and fix it with CWShredder, instead do another scan with Hijackthis and post a fresh log with the Dllcompare log

OK, I removed ViewPoint Manger and restarted.  I then got the CWS.Searchx back.  SpywareGuard seems to catch it each time it trys to change the home page.  This time I let it go and did not clean it up.  One other note.  In the Tray I have two Touchpad icons.  I had 8 entries in the DLLCompare lower window but it was able to clean up 5 of them.  The log is below.

My Windows edition is XP Home.

Thanks for your help.

That exposed a hidden .dll, let's make sure we see everything
First, you posted with this log

And then you posted back with this log

Logfile of HijackThis v1.97.7
Scan saved at 11:33:02 AM, on 10/6/2004
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)

http://www.resplendence.com/reglite
Install, run, copy and paste this line to reglite's address bar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

and hit the "go" tab. Find: "Appinit_Dlls" value on the right side panel, DoubleClick, copy and post here the information in the 'Value' field.

Also post back with a fresh hijackthis log from version 1.98.2

Sorry about the older HijackThis.

I have been getting a popup that talks about Spyware on my PC now.  Is that related?

Here is the new info.

Uninstall your version of Ad-Aware from Add/Remove Programs, it will soon be out of date
Download and Install the latest free version
Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.05
After installation-CHECK FOR UPDATES
Run this later

Ensure you have CWShredder 1.59.1
Don't run it yet

You may want to print out these instructions as there all important
Set Windows to Show Hidden Files and Folders

Create a new folder for backups somewhere: (e.g. My Documents\Backups)

Use the Registrar Lite program again. Copy and paste the key below into reglite's address bar and hit 'Go':

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

Left click once to highlight the Windows key
(the key is highlighted as a purple folder in the left hand pane of reglite) and use Reglite's File menu>>>Export, save in the following formats:
Export once and name
1.) Winkey.reg  (Save as type: regedit4 .reg type)>>should be default

Export again and save as
2.) Winkey.hiv (in Save as type: Scroll to select-regetd32/WinAPI *hiv *dat files)

After you have both files backed up

Right-click on the Windows key in the left pane and rename it to NotWindows

DoubleClick "Appinit_Dlls" value on right pane and Erase the data in the 'Value' box at the the bottom of the new pane. The data to remove will be:

"C:\WINDOWS\System32\winf.dll" hit 'Apply' and 'Ok' to set.

After it is removed rename "NotWindows" back to Windows

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE

Find and delete this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\winf.dll

If you have trouble deleting the file, RightClick on the File>Security> And check the box:
'Allow inheritable permissions
from parent' to propagate... '
Apply and ok.

When done:
====Navigate to backups location, And DoubleClick on the Winkey.reg file.
Answer yes to the prompt.

===Open Registrar lite again,
Navigate back to the Windows Key in purple
Highlight it and use the File>>>Import
browse to and select the Winkey.hiv file.
Merge and follow the prompts.

The above 2 steps are important in keeping your system secure

DoubleClick on the Appinit_Dlls value again
and erase the data in the
value field. (C:\Windows\System32\winf.dll)

Close Reg Lite and open up CWShredder and let it FIX all problems

===Do a DiskCleanup>>START----Run---type in cleanmgr
Ensure that Temp and Temporary Internet Files are checked

RESTART back in Normal Mode
Open Ad-Aware: Do a Full system scan----Remove All Critical objects
RESTART your computer to finish the cleaning process

Post back with a Fresh hijackthis log when your done

Thanks so much for your help.  winf.dll is gone and about:blank has not returned and SpywareGuard has not had a popup.  It does look like I've got to clean up the leftovers of search assistant etc.

I only have the duplicate TouchPad icons in the tray...a very minor issue. (TPTray.exe) I only see one start in the registry so I'm not sure why 2 show up.

Here is the HijackThis log...

If you didn't intentionally install Weatherbug I would Uninstall it!!!
The free version is know to cause unwanted popups and brings ads to your desktop

Temporarily disable Spyware Guard

Do another Scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries
and then FIX CHECKED when ALL other windows are closed

Whatever 015 entries you didn't manually add to the trusted zones you can remove too....

RESTART your computer

You should install these 2 apps., they add extra security while
silently protecting you, without running in the background

SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
Download link==Download link
Scroll down and click on IE-SPYAD.EXE Free!

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks

Post back with a Fresh hijackthis log afterwards, let me know how things are running

Looks good, just have hijackthis fix these entries

O9 - Extra button: SideStep - {3E230861-5C87-11D3-A1C6-00105A1B41B8} - (no file)

O16 - DPF: {0837121A-6472-43BD-8A40-D9221FF1C4CE} - http://download.sidestep.com/get/k00726/sb028.cab

Again, any 015 entries you didn't manually add to the Trusted Zones

If you uninstalled Weatherbug you can fix this entry too
O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\PROGRA~1\AWS\WEATHE~1\Weather.exe (HKCU)

RESTART your computer and delete this folder
C:\PROGRAM FILES\AWS <--this folder if you uninstalled weatherbug

That should do it
