Hi cether01,

You're log isn't that bad.

1) Run HJT again and place a check next to the following items:

O2 - BHO: MultimppObj Class - {002EB272-2590-4693-B166-FBD5D9B6FEA6} - C:\WINDOWS\multimpp.dll
O2 - BHO: ADP UrlCatcher Class - {F4E04583-354E-4076-BE7D-ED6A80FD66DA} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msbe.dll (file missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Win Server Updt] C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe

2) Close any open windows and browsers and hit "Fix Checked".

******You may want to print the following directions out as you will temporarily not have access to the internet.******

3) Reboot in safe mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4) Enable hidden files and folders:
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

5) Find and delete the following file:
C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe

6) Reboot into normal mode.  (simply reboot as you would normally).

*************

7) I recommend you run some online virus scans:
http://housecall60.trendmicro.com/en/start_corp.asp?id=scan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co...n_principal.htm
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php

Cool Run HJT again and post a new log.

Below is my new HJT log.  I deleted the 2 items in HJT but the file you told me to look (C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe) for was not there.   Before I did this I ran a online VS at housecall.trendmircro.com and it found 3 virusus (trojans) and deleted them and I believe that the wuptd.exe file was one of the files it deleted so, that may have been why I was not able to find it.  I do believe that my pop-up problem is fixed.  I have done some browsing and nothing has happened so far so, we shall see, but reguardless, here is my new log.

Hi cether01,

Almost there!

1) Run HJT again and place a check next to the following item:

O16 - DPF: {15AD4789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://public.windupdates.com/get_file.php?bt=ie&p=0855dbd64be55c053581a2fe09344e1834b4698b00b349bea8f33aaaed8b7311aff5c66b14858998286b44d39a2e09f9bbd6a811bbaf3f8bb26de71c26b4:c43885e87f8e68f92b176b737839ac05

The following two are optional fixes, but I recommend you fix them as they are resource hogs:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
This is part of QuickTime that allows SystemTray access to QuickTime.  If you use Quicktime a lot, keep it, other wise have HJT fix it.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe -osboot
System Tray icon for RealPlayer. If you subsequently start RealPlayer manually it adds itself back to the start-up list. You can stop this from happening by right-clicking on the tray icon and disabling SmartCenter via Preferences

2) Close any open windows and browsers and hit "Fix Checked".

3) Restart and post a new log.

Hopefully we got it all this time :-D

Looks good over here, hows the computer running?

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:

  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.

  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot.  Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.

  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system.  It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc.  Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer

  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.
