There a couple of bad things on your log.

Before we continue, you are using an outdated version of HijackThis.  Please update to the newest version, 1.98.2 from here.

Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there, and double click to run it.

Post a new log in this thread and I will help you remove the malware.

Hi newhaven24,

We'll get your log cleaned up in no time.

1) Run HJT and place a check next to the following items:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Update] vpc32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Update] vpc32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Update] vpc32.exe

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {578FC4E3-151E-456c-AF8E-B63061EFE228}} - (no file)

2) Close any open browsers and windows and click "Fix Checked".

***You may want to print out the below directions as your internet access will be temporarily disabled***

3) Reboot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4) Show hidden files/folders
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

5) Go to Start -> Search
In "All or part of the filename" type in vpc32.exe
In "Look In" browser to C:/Windows
In "Advanced Options" make sure the following things are checked:
Search System Folders
Search Hidden Files and Folders
Search Subfolders

6) Delete the file when found.

7) Restart your computer into normal mode (simply restart your computer as you normally would).

******

Cool Post a new log.

Congratulations, your log is clean!

Hows the computer running?

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:

  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.

  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot.  Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.

  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system.  It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc.  Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer

  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.
