PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: Windows 98
Problem Application Name & Version: :Blank and 4bf65
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:

First let me say that I know that you've discussed these problems before several times, but having read your rules and looked at previous posts on this, I thought that it's wise to start from scratch with my own post.  That's because you guys always seem to want each individual to post their own Hijack This Log and start a new post.

I hope that you guys can help.  Thanks for reading anyway.

Ok, here's the problem.  I've had the :Blank Home Page hijack for maybe a year.  On top of that, the wretched page seems to install iteself as a tb feature on Tools Home Page choose Blank.  I get pop ups (with spelling errors) telling me that I am infected and to click here.  I've ignored them every time for months!

I have loaded (as a result of reading posts here) Lava soft SE Persaonal and Spy ot Search and Destroy.  Today, I also loaded up Geek Super Hero.

These are cool, but they ONLY show me what the problems are and allow me to reduce the symptoms by deleting files, and, in the case of GSH, telling me when my Home Page has been re-hijacked and allowing me to reset it.

Up to now, the underlying cause of the problem is still there.  Somewhere or other, on my computer, there is a file(s) that reinstall the :About blank everytime I go online.

I guess that I will have to download Hijack this and post the results.  I'm willing and able.

Can you guys talk me through this very simply.  I'm not a technical fellow, but I know my way around a little.

What's the latest download place for Hijack this, and what should I do next?

Cheers

Many thanks for all of you help on this irritaing problem.

Hijack This

Make sure you unzip hijack this to its own folder
such as C:\Program files as this is where the backups will
be created.Run Hijack this but do NOT fix anything.Click save
log and a log will open in notepad.Copy and paste your log here.

I am moving this thread to the security and viruses forum

Thanks for the help.

Sorry I posted in the worng place to start with.

Right, I've downloaded and ran Hijack this and created a Log.  However, it doesn't seem to want to open up in notepad.  It wants to open in Adobe and then I get an error message - file not pdf.

I'll incluse the file here in case that's any use.  If not, please advise, and I will try to open it another way with your help.

Tried to insert file and it wanted me to log in, have done.  Still won't let me insert - tells me to log in again!

I can see the HijackThis log, but can't copy it at the momnet for reason above.

Basically, I noticed that as soon as I'd finished with hijack this and tried to close down explorer to reboot or, later, start up hijack this via explorer to show the new scan, Geek Super Hero immediately informed me that my home page was being turned to about blank (note not from :about blank - I was wise to ingnore the orininal change that Hijack this fixed away from this as I want that!).  Hence, it seems that there must be something else on my computer which just keeps bringing these :about blank files right back even when you kicked them off.

I hope that you can help!  Talk about a weed that you can't get rid of!!

A few things though:

I followed the instructions to the letter.  In safe mode, the hidden files were already set to be shown as was show all files (I must have done this before sometime).

There were no files 6D6BC180.hta and LMMFIEA.dll, so I never had to delete them.
I didn't get an otion to delete cookies in internet options, gentab.  I lloked around and didn't seem to have many cookies, but I'm not overly sure.

Anyway, I think we should have made some progress now.  Many thanks again.  AM I clear, do you think?

That's great, I've not had any problems since.  I'll keep my fingers crossed.

The question now is, how do I avoid getting this problem again?  Is there a specific way it is usually caught?

Maybe it slowed down my computer, too as I noticed it was getting slower.  Who knows.

Many thanks again,

David
