PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: Win 2K 5.00.2195 Service Pack 4
Problem Application Name & Version:
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:

My desktop's been hijacked. The whole background's gone black and  there's a big message saying: "Warning you're in danger. Secure yourself Right Now! There's a link out to http://213.159.117.149/?affid=DNN-2 which is a dodgy site trying to sell anti-spyware software.

I've used AdAware, SpyBot, SpySweeper and CW Shredder.
These programs helped remove most of the problems including Jeem trojan, TIBs dialer and other malicious items. I've also followed advice from other posts and used Hijack This to remove WinAdTools.exe, internat.exe, systime.exe, IESearchToolbar.dll
I've also gone into Add/remove Programs and deleted IE Search and WinAdTools.
The browser (MSIE) seems back to normal and doesn't link back to find-on-the-net.com which is good news.
BUT I cannot get rid of this black window that's taken over the entire dektop.

Here's my current Hijack This Log:

You can have HJT fix these 2 entries, but I don't see anything jumping out at me...Grin
You do have a few things we can prevent from Starting up on Boot that are Resource Hogs but would not cause whats happening now.
Once that is fixed we'll look at cleaning up your Startup apps.

Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - (no file)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - (no file)

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders (WinXp has up to 4 of them) / Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your "Recycle Bin" and Reboot.

Before opening your browser goto TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS and make sure your Homepage is correct,if not ,type the URL you would like in the HomePage box.

Now re-run HJT and post a new logfile back here.

Hi Cactus,
Tried what you said and emptied all the temp folders I could find by using the %temp% command and also the temp internet files through IE. Also cleared recycle bin. Are there any temp folders I'm overlooking in windows 2000?
Used HJT to remove the two items you suggested.
Homepage is opening fine.
BUT the desktop still has this ugly black window that loads on startup and takes over the entire screen!! Aghhh!!!

Here's the latest HJT log:

I can't see anything in your logfile...looks clean!
We can prevent some APPS from starting up on Boot-up though.
If you would like to eliminate some Start-Up items let us know.
Preventing then from Starting Up does just that,it DOES NOT disable the APPLICATION.

Scoured the support forums and found the fix last night!
People are calling it the "Secure Yourself" Desktop Hijack.

Here's the link to fix it:
www.smart-security.info/removal.html

These are the guys that my hijacked desktop linked back to.
It seems, on the surface at least, that they're an anti-spware company that got in with some majorly dodgy advertisers and were forced to post the fix on their site. Can't be good for business.
Now my active desktop's restored to normal. Yay!!!
Spread the word if others encounter the same problem.

In terms of security, what's the best firewall software to install?
I'm also planning on switching browsers to Firefox as IE has too many security holes.

Thank you so much for your assistance Cactus.
Keep up the good work!
