Hello giantbbfan,

First:

Empty your Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Cookies.

Then:

Download / Install / Update / and Run:

SpyBot
And:
Adaware SE
Delete or quarantine everything it finds.

Then:

You are using an older version of HJT so please Download and install the newest version of:  HiJackThis .

(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders or your Desktop. A good place to make a folder would be in My Documents,as this is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)

Then doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan". Make sure all Windows and Browsers are closed.
When the scan is finished, use "Save Log" button, save the log in a text file, best to save your text file in the same folder as where you put HiJackthis.

I have done all that you suggested.  Whatever virus/trojan infected my computer shredded Norton Systemworks.  I also cannot view my Network settings in Windows XP.  Can you tell me what virus trojan infected me so that I can fix these problems.  Here is my new Hijack this log after running Adaware and Spybot.

**(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders. This is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)**

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following: (They may or may not be there)

lobas098.exe
dnsbak.exe

Turn off System Restore. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.) Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - SOFTWARE - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {72AC6865-B1D3-4C32-A27B-4B3BF04DE655} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [*dnsbak] C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\dnsbak.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*dnsbak] C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\dnsbak.exe rerun

Go to Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs and remove the
 following if they are there:

dnsbak

Now delete these Folders or Files that are Highlighted: (You may need enable "Show all Files" and disable "Hide System Files" in Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / View Tab) (You may have to boot to "Safe Mode" in order to delete some Files/Folders)

C:\WINDOWS\System32\lobas098.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\dnsbak.exe

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders (WinXp has up to 4 of them) / Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your "Recycle Bin" and Reboot.

Turn on System restore,before opening your browser goto TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS and make sure your Homepage is correct,if not ,type the URL you would like in the HomePage box.

Now re-run HJT and post a new logfile back here.

Thanks Cactus!  I tried everything you suggested.  I was able to get the lobas098 file deleted and stop it from loading.  However, I cannot delete dnsbak.exe.  It won't allow me to delete either in normal or safe modes.  When I try to stop it from operating as a process in task manager, it just reopens again -- pesky little fella.

Anyway, what's next.  How do I get rid of this thing?

Here's my log file from my last HJT scan.

First let's Set Windows to show Hidden files and folders
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

WToolsS.exe
lobas098.exe
dnsbak.exe
bkinst.exe
dosimg.exe
srvav.exe
avkey.exe

Turn off System Restore. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.) Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

Cactus:

I followed your directions, but still can't delete the two dnsbak files.  Also when you suggested deleting all of the temp files, I did so by using the disk clean up utility and deleting the temporary files, recycle bin, and internet temporary files.  If this isn't the correct way to delete the "temp" files you mentioned, please indicate where on my system those temp files are specifically located.

Just to let you know, my windows installer is not functioning and even though I have internet access, my network connections and network places folders are blank.

Here is my new Hijack This log file ---

In Xp, here are some locations of Temp files ...

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

Delete any files and subfolders within this folder.Files and folders that were placed there by Windows or Windows-based programs were not meant to be permanent and can be safely deleted.

Run the scan again deleting anything I posted in the above fix that is still there,then DELETE ALL the Temp files.

Cactus:

Once again, I did all that you suggested and got rid of all temp files and temporary internet files for all users.  I couldn't delete one file from my temp directory -- kabsnd.dat.  I still eradicate the dnsbank file called "O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*dnsbak] C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\dnsbak.exe rerun" by using the fix files in Hijack This.  It recreates itself everytime.  But we are now down to this last file.  Got any other suggestion for me?

Thanks.  Here's my latest log file

Well, we seem to be hitting a deadend here.  I just can't get rid of that dnsbak.exe file.  Even in safe mode, I get the error message when trying to delete that "the file is in use or is write protected.  I can't stop the process from running in task manager.

Here's my most recent logfile.  Do you know what this pest is and how to remove it?

Ok .. let's try this.... Download this Removal tool
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FixVundo.exe

Have All windows closed...Disconnect completely from the Internet.

Save that fix from Symantec's to your desktop..
Open the fix and run it with the START button

Restart your computer

Rerun the Removal Tool again...

Now Rerun HJT and post back with a fresh logfile.

Well good news and bad news.  The Symantec removal tool completely eradicated the virus which I suspect was Win32.Agent.l (see my most recent Hijack This log file below).  The bad news is that it has chewed up Windows XP pretty badly.  Windows installer and uninstaller are not functioning.  Although I can access the internet through my home network, my network connections appear blank.  My USB jump drive crashes my computer now.  Do you have any suggestions on how to repair these problems or am I looking at a fresh Win XP install?  Please give me your advice.

Here is my most recent Hijack This log.  Thanks very much for your help.
