When I go to format the hard drive it gets to 60 percent then the computer beeps once and then stops.

Have you tried more than once? If yes, does it always stop at 60%. Can you run the computer for a long period of time without it restarting or freezing? Try running Maxtor's Power Max to check the drive. If that doesn't find anything use Maxtor's Max Blast to format it.

Good luck
