PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: WinXP
Problem Application Name & Version:
Problem Hardware Make & Model: Dell CDRW/DVD drive for Dell Latitude Laptop (not sure of manufacturer)
Error Messages: "cannot read cd format" or "insert cd"

hi, i've had my laptop for a while now and i didn't have many problems with it but recently the CD/DVD drive stopped recognizing CD's. I thought it was the drive itself since the laptop is pretty old so i decided to replace it with a new CDRW/DVD drive. When I got that drive though, nothing changed. Just like before, this drive recognizes any DVD's I put in but has trouble finding CD's, authentic and burned. I guess it does see that there is something in the drive because it makes several attempts to read it but usually gives up with no result at which point any effort to access the CD results in a "drive empty" message. Very rarely, the drive does recognize CD's and shows its contents for several seconds but trying to access those contents results in a "unrecognized format" message.
this started only recently and applies to both drives that i now have. they both have problems reading any kind of CD's but there is absolutely no problem with DVD's.
Do you know what the cause of this is and how I can fix it?
Thanks
