PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version:xp home
Problem Application Name & Version:windows messenger
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:

Each time i connect to the internet, windows messenger automatically signs me in, the only reason i know its done it is when i get an instant message from one of my contacts, there is nothing in the system tray showing that ive been logged on. I've looked in add/remove programs and cant see windows messenger, only msn 7 . If i go and sign onto msn, i get a message telling me that ive been signed out of windows messenger as im signing in on msn, and i do this just to get me off the messenger. There has to be an easier way . I would really preciate some help with this, as id like to be able to choose when i sign on, not have it done for me.

All i have in add/remove programs is  msn messenger 7.0 , the version that keeps signing itself on is windows messenger 5  , ive looked in start> all programs and can only see messenger 7.0 , when messenger 5 signs me on there isnt any icon sitting in the system tray so i cant even go to the options and untick sign on auto.

Does WINDOWS MESSENGER show up in ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS?

Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger are 2 different apps.

This will DISABLE the Windows Version that is Automatically signing in at Start-up...I'm assuming your browser is XP..
In Windows XP:

(1) Select "Start"
(2) Choose "Control Panel"
(3) Choose "Administrative Tools"
** note in Windows XP Home edition, Admistrative Tools is in Performance and Maintence
(4) Choose "Services"
(5) Right-click on "Messenger"
(6) Select "Stop"
To permanently disable Messenger:
(7) Right click "Messenger"
(Cool Select "Properties"
(9) Change "Startup Type" to "Disabled" and click "OK"

This is the instructions on how to disable Windows Messenger at boot
Disabling Messenger Service in Windows XP

Here are the instructions to disable MSN Messenger at boot
How to disable MSN Messenger from startup

You can also look in the System Configuration Utility and see what starts at boot.
Click Start, at the run command type in msconfig. At the System Configuration Utility clik the Start tab.

Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger are 2 different apps.

Have you tried to find the Windows Messenger application yet?

You might get around this annoying problem if you just gave it a different extension, for example .ex_ instead of .exe.

And another thing! The Messenger Service and Windows Messenger aren't the same applications either. Windows Messenger is the MSN Messenger equivalent that's shipped with Windows XP by default.
