PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version:  Windows XP Home Version
Problem Application Name & Version:
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:

I'm trying to help a young friend who is having problems with his laptop.  Norton's online scan yields the following:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\eplrr0.dll is infected with Backdoor.Trojan
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{B37680B2-BA0A-4E5D-BF30-83E44C588624}\RP227\A0060899.exe is infected with Trojan.Adwaheck

Can anyone help?  Other problem is that I cannot bring up Control Panel; any ideas, or is that another forum?

Thanks

wouldn't you know it; now I can't connect to the internet. Huh? maybe tomorrow.  which is the pepper virus?  and is there a possible partial fix that doesn't require that that machine be connected?

thanks

no change; i think it has to do something with an attempted installation of Norton that didn't work even after five hours on line with their tech support.  I called this morning to get their help with getting it off, but ran out of time on hold.  I appreciate your help.

Don't bother with Norton, EVER!
It's responsible for trashing too many computers, due to it's insistence on taking over boot sectors and other important hard disk areas.

Try the free applications that are available out there, AVG from http://www.grisoft.com and Sygate Firewall from http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm. Both of which are easy to use and offer much better protection than Norton can ever hope to give.

Don't fall for the Norton hype, it's worse than a very bad thing Wink. I wouldn't even touch it if they paid me for it, let alone having to pay for it myself.

Well, I'm certainly ready to take your advice about norton, but much as I enjoy a good racist football rant, I still need to get this laptop back online.

Concidering you are using Norton Anti-virus my suggestion to you would be to take the hard drive out and set it as a slave on another machine. You can run Housecall which is a free online virus scanner and scan for viruses. Im betting you still have them. You can also run Adaware SE when set as a slave also. This may give you the edge you need to connect and get PepperFix. When you go to install just direct it to the slaved drive.
Worth a shot Grin

This is a very inexpensive but useful cable to have.

thanks, geekgirl, but with my lack of skill, and given that this is not even my laptop, I can't really see myself taking out the hard drive, Shocked and wouldn't know how to make it a slave, etc.  Is there no way to get at these two viruses without being connected to the internet?  I'm going to try and manually uninstall all of the Norton software, which may help.

Go to Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs and remove the
 following if they are there:

Rebate_Nation
Iesearch
VBundleOuterDL
VBouncer
Bakra
SideSearch
PopUpSearch

Now delete these Folders or Files that are Highlighted: (You may need enable "Show all Files" and disable "Hide System Files" in Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / View Tab) (You may have to boot to "Safe Mode" in order to delete some Files/Folders)

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Iesearch.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pcs\pcsvc.exe
C:\Program Files\Rebate_Nation\RebateNation0.exe
C:\WINDOWS\BTGrab.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\winb2s32.dll

C:\Program Files\Common Files\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\eplrr0.dll

In Xp, here are some locations of Temp files

Thanks, cactus.  Looks like most of it worked.  When I asked HiJackThis to fix all the line you enumerated, it generated an error on the line which begins with O21 and ends with eplrr0.dll, which is one of the programs infected with a virus.  The error message indicated that it had created a file in wordpad, but i couldn't find it; sorry.  then, when i was deleting, i couldn't get rid of eplrr0.dll, even in safe mode.

below is the latest HiJackThis log.

thanks for your help
