Good evening.
Your forums seem quite helpful, and your senior members most informed.
Therefore, I'd like to ask your help.
I do not know the history of this computer, only that it belonged to the teenage son of a friend of mine. I imagine it has been infected with a number of virii and/or trojans, and I lack the knowledge to remedy this. Internet explorer is a mess, filled with undesired toolbars and stolen searches.
WMP10 frequently displays the error message "cannot perform operation, low memory" on initialization, whilst at least 500 megs of RAM are unused. At times, Firefox itself will fail to play video, saying "cannot create the directshow player". It is commonplace for explorer.exe to freeze, requiring several attempts in task manager to kill and resurrect it, and even this is hit or miss.
Svchost.exe often monopolizes compute cycles, and is filled with the threads ADVAPI32.DLL!CreateProcessAsUserW+0x42e, and kernel32.dll!RegisterWaitForInputIdle+0x4a. These two are listed many times; I will furnish the numerous others upon request.
IExplore.exe will often open to sites likely to use adware if the computer is left idle for long. Neither Spybot nor Lavasoft seems capable of stopping any of this effectively.
I doubt this is related, but it is an issue nonetheless. At startup,
windows alerts me that it has found new hardware, listed as MEDIA and TVAudio Media Crossbar or something thereabouts. A GeForce FX5600 was recently installed by an amateur, and I imagine this is the source of the problem.
These are the symptoms. Should I gain knowledge of others, I will update immediately. I thank you for your help, and hope you can assist me. Hijack log follows:

*Update*
At the advice to another of geekgirl, I attempted to utilize Trendmicro's HouseCall. However, it seems to be looking for netscape plugins, which I myself cannot locate.

I used AVG free edition to scan this computer last night, and I seem to have clicked "heal" in my haste. After which, a program demanded that I install .net framework, which proved impossible. It asked that I restart, and when I did, windows never made it past the bootscreen. By that, I mean the little bar moved to the right over and over for as long as I let it. I am now logged in under "Last known good config", and my svchost.exe is still a cycle whore. Perhaps "last known config" does not include avg's doings. Updated log:

I did as you said, including the safemode booting.
Upon logging in normally, svchost.exe was once again infested with kernel32.dll!RegisterWaitForInputIdle+0x4a, and after removing the offending threads from svchost.exe, nothing worked. Could not launch IE, firefox, by keyboard, explorer, or even run dialog. I am in safemode at the moment, and after posting will try normal login again. HJT log:

System booted effectively this time, svchost did not eat cpu cycles, though it currently has four instances open, all of which have ADVAPI32.DLL!CreateProcessAsUserW+0x42e, kernel32.dll!RegisterWaitForInputIdle+0x4a in them at least once, one has at least 20 apiece.
