im a bit stuck on a question so if anyone can help me on it feel free,
what value for the hardware version shown in the general tab of windows device manager for the usb may indicate a motherboard upgrade as necessary

You know, this question doesn't make sense. Maybe it's badly written, but maybe you're also omitting which Windows you're trying to talk about or do this test for.

Only Windows 95, 98, SE and ME had a General tab in Device Manager. Get above that and all you have are General tabs per USB controller/root hub. There it doesn't make sense. The only other General tab is in System Properties, but you're not asking that.

If it is for Windows 9x/SE/ME, it still doesn't make sense as these Windows versions will never give a damn on what motherboard it runs, so it won't tell you the motherboard needs to be changed if it cannot find the necessary USB information (which it can get from a BIOS update and better drivers).

So the question as such doesn't make sense. Just guess the lowest number.
