PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version:Windows ME
Problem Application Name & Version:
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:

This is a friends computer and do not know alot about the system.  Uses ME its an HP Pavilion XE783 which is a celeron processor.

Anyway when you start up the computer it trys to find new hardware.  It will not read the cdrom drive at all computer doesnt even reconize the drive.  The drive is connected by the IDE cable and has power.  The drive does not even show up in the bios whether you specify that it is a cdrom drive or leave it at auto detect.  Anyway after the computer trys to find the new hardware drivers in the windows directory it fails and a pop up window comes up and says Enum\HTREE\ROOT\O in the title bar and gives the message says SURegCreateKey Failed.

He was installing Real Deal Slots game and when installing it told him to install directx 8.1 so he downloaded from microsoft and then it wanted him to restart for changes to take effect.  It restarted back up ok and they played the game till the end of the night and turned the CPU off till morning.  When they got on the computer in the morning is when this all started happening.

1) the CD-ROM is probably dead - see what happens if you replace it with another one
2)http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=305668

I'd also want to see a Belarc Advisor report of the installed Hotfixes (www.belarc.com, as it looks like the system is badly behind with patches.

Oh - BTW - If you have Norton software installed, disable it whenever doing updates to the system or installing patches (or better still, get rid of it altogether, and use womething that actually works WITH Windows instad of against it!!
