PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version:Win XP
Problem Application Name & Version:Outlook Express
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:

Hi Everybody, My brothers computer had not been used for about three months, and when he tried to use it he would connect to the internet OK. When he then tried to send an e-mail he would be immediately cut off from his ISP.
I checked his settings and unticked the box that said "always disconnect after sending and receiving" and this cured the problem of his ISP being disconnected but when he now tries to send an e-mail he gets a box with an error message saying "You have been disconnected by your server-this may be due to server problems, Network problems or periods of inactivity".  He can surf the net ok but it just Outlook Express that he is having trouble with now. He cannot send or receive any e-mails.
Has anyone got any ideas on this one.  Ted

Try something for me here.

Go to http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/ and download/install Thunderbird.
Set up his email account the same way as it's set up in OE, I even think you can import them into Thunderbird.
Then try sending a couple of test messages from his account to himself. If that works, you know there's something wrong with OE.
If it gets a problem as well, like this disconnecting malarky, then it's most likely settings that are incorrect somewhere.

While we're on it, is his OE patched up to the top from Windows Update?
