W98 SE
Gigabyte MB AMIBIOS

Hi all

I'm having  a problem with a PC not booting up. There is no display, it just starts up, keeps trying to access the floppy, with a single beep. I've inserted the W98 boot disk, and it just keeps reading it. I have so far tried pretty much everything, including 3 different graphics cards (AGP & PCI), different monitors. I have disconnected HDs & CDs. However, when I disconnect the floppy cable from the MB, I get 8 beeps. Any other suggestions before I chuck it down the stairs??!!

Thanks in advance

I would disconnect everything in the pc. Just have the cpu, ram, video card, keyboard and HD connected. See if it boots up. If you are still getting the beeps, then you know it is one of these components. Is this a new system? If it is, then I would say it is either ram, cpu or motherboard that is the culprit, since you tried different video cards.

I've tried that. I meant to say that all the RAM chips have been checked in another PC.
I replaced the MB and processor in this system about 18 months ago, so most of it is pretty new.

Could you try the cpu in the other system? Or are they different models? I would say that it is either the cpu or the motherboard that is gone on this system.

Just as a follow up, I've checked the processor now, and all was ok. So that just leaves the MB, which I cannot test.
