PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: Windows XP Home Ed SP 2
Problem Application Name & Version:XP native system software
Problem Hardware Make & Model: hp pavilion a720n
Error Messages:windows cannot find "msconfig"

Hello and thank you to all of you who contribute this site.  I have somehow managed to delete an important system file or files and now msconfig will not work.  Yikes!  Around the same time as I started having this problem I started getting this error message when the desktop started:  "runner file name (updates from HP.exe) lacks a '-' (the app id separator)"

Also my windows help has stopped working, and I'm thinking all of this is related.  I believe it is the result of a mass-scale spyware elimination crusade wherein there appears to have been a few innocent casualties.  But I'm no expert.  What do you people think?

Thank you much

Try this: Start->Run, type sfc /scannow and hit Enter.
Keep your XP CD handy, it will be asked for. The SFC (System File Checker) will scan for and replace all missing or corrupt system files from the XP CD.

It flashes a DOS window and then nothing.  It doesn't seem to work anymore either.

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the CoolWebSearch hijacker.

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:

download AdAware SE Personal Edition from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to remove spyware, adware, and other such nasties from your system.

Okay, I did all that and it still doesn't work.  Anything else I can try?
