PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: XP HOME
Problem Application Name & Version: Windows XP HOME (no SP)
Problem Hardware Make & Model: gateway 500S
Error Messages: n/a

Well, tonight I ran across something I have never seen before.  I bought a computer from a friend and was going to use it for a backup.  It has XP HOME on it but its the first version of XP with no service packs.  Well, after running AdAware, Spybot and Trendmicro's HouseCall scan, I found some terrible problems and they were in abundance.  There were Trojans out the wazoo, a couple of worms and several ad/spy progz.  So, after removing all of them, cleaning them or quarantining them, the condition got worse.

Now things are missing that windows should be displaying.  For example:
When you click START>SEARCH, you should see the little doggie on the left with search options and a place to type in the file you are searching for.  Well, I only get a dog in the left frame with a blue background, nothing else.
When I hit CTRL+ALT+DEL to pull up the task manager, nothing happens.  As an alternative method, I right clicked on the taskbar and went to TASKMANAGER, nothing happens.
When I go into USER ACCOUNTS in the Control Panel, its just a blank whote window with no options.

I know that a clean install would be my best option, but, unfortunately, I dont have the original OEM windows CD that came with it and neither does the previous owner so, thats not an option.  I went into DOS and ran sfc/scannow (System File Checker) and used my XP Disk for my other computer, it worked fine but did not report that there were any discrepencies in the system files v/s the CD files. so, I am kinda at my ropes end here.

Any Suggestions from anyone?

I'd say, reformat, install XP on it with your XP CD, using the OEM serial number on the PC and then use the drivers downloadable from Gateway to update it: http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/5200Series/1008272/1008272cl2.shtml

as far as I know, all XP needs is a correct serial number (thus not one of the hacked ones or generated by a number generator). So it may well work. The OEM version of XP is the same as a normal version of XP, just that it comes in a white sleeve (i.e. non boxed or pre-installed only).
