Operating System Version: Windows XP PRo
Problem Application Name & Version:
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:

Hi all,
I am not sure what is going on with the PC, i let my 16 yr old nephew "check his mail when visiting over christmas" and it has gone haywire.  Everyday i seem to get at least 2-3 virus emails, zone alarm catches most of them and i delete them promptly and i NEVER open an email that remotely looks funky. How can i stop these emails? My internet is acting very slow and i am on a cable modem.  Applications are hanging. I ran pest patrol, spybot, and adaware.  I have run virus scans in zone alarm, but the last 4 days have gotten way worse.  I work at home and connect to my office via remote desktop and am scared to infect the office.  I am not terribly computer literate and cant afford not to miss any more work than i have had.  Please if anyone can take a look at this log i would be forever greatful. Peace, Erin

Browse that computer to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc and find a file that's called hosts
It has no extension at all.
Open it with Notepad, after right clicking it and check if it's attributed as Read-Only. If it is, then Turn it off for the time being.
Copy the entire contents of that file and post them here.

That's all I can do for now, as I'm waiting for the HJT gurus to arrive.
The only entries that should be listed by default are:

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

127.0.0.1       localhost

Anything beyond that should be deleted ASAP, at least for the time being.
After doing that, open up Internet Explorer and go to http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
Scan your PC there and see if it notices anything amiss.

Here is the copy of the Host file. There seems to be extra spacing in it, so how should i address that? Thanks
for helping Smiley

Your Host File is clean...nothing in there stopping you.

Your logfile looks good.. Grin

You can re-run HJT and remove this entry:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LDM] \Program\BackWeb-8876480.exe

You can also goto ADD/REMOVE and uninstall it as it is not needed.. Wink
