Some more info would be nice. What OS did you have before?

Do you have the drivers for XP that'll work with your sound?

A lack of information comes from a lack of knowledge.

I had Windows ME prior.  I tried to find out specifically which Creative SB Live! sound card I have and find the drivers and download them, but I don't know if I was successful.

Thanks.

Ok. How did you try to find out what sound card you had??

I'm not sure if there's another way but the way I use when there's no other way is to open up the case and look at the card. there's usually a little black chip on the card. If there's more than one don't worry. Just write down what's on the chips.

Look for something like "CMI8738". That would mean it's a C-Media 8738. Maybe Jee has a better way to find out? I'll ask him.

If you've got a Soundblaster Live! it doesn't matter much which drivers you download. All of the drivers from Creative's driver site essentially end up as being 5.1 drivers, no matter if you just have the Live!, the Live! Platinum or the Live! 24-bit. I checked them all, all Windows drivers point to the same packages.

How to get to the drivers from above link: Choose Soundblaster, Live!, Soundblaster Live!#8482;, Windows XP, English and hit Go. On the next page scroll all the way down to the Drivers. Download & install.

I went: Sound Blaster -> Live! -> Sound Blaster Live - Windows XP, English

I successfully downloaded and installed Sound Blaster Live! - LiveDrvUni-Pack English and Sound Blaster Live! - Driver Patch.

Still no sound. Sad

Thanks.

The card worked before the install??  Check the device manager to see if it even shows up there with the drivers installed.

Under Sound, video and game controllers in Device Manager are:
Audio Codecs
Creative Game Port
Creative SB Live!
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Video Codecs

None of them have that yellow (!) mark.  Suggestions?

Interestingly, when I go to Start -> Creative -> Sound Blaster Live! -> Creative Audio HQ and it says, "Cannot initialize audio driver.  Reinstall audio driver."

...but I just followed your directions and installed those drivers?

Does your motherboard have on-board sound by any chance?
