PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: Windows 98
Problem Application Name & Version:
Problem Hardware Make & Model: HP Pavillion
Error Messages: Mprexe  This program has performed an illegal operation & will be shut down

Help! I have a computer that is running Windows 98.  I don't know what happened I was checking email on it and then I went to play a game (that I have played hundreds of times before) and suddenly I got an error message (Mprexe error mentioned above).  I ctrp alt delete to restart and it seems to load it gets just past the Windows 98 screen and then the Mprexe message comes up.  If I close the error box the screen remains black.  In the task list all that is running is Msloop and Ms(I forget what the other one is at the moment).  What can I do?Huh??

Is it running in a network of sorts? Read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310495 completely and see if it applies to you.

Actually, it seems to be more like this http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=178084 but it says to go to the start button in order to do the fix...how can I do that when the computer doesn't load far enough to show me the start button?

You can start to DOS? Boot the computer, then just after the POST (Power On Self Test) screens start tapping F8. You'll get a menu. Choose to boot to DOS.

On the prompt (I assume it'll be C:\Windows>), type dir *.pwl {hit Enter}
A list of all password lists will pass by. Presumably only one.
Now type ren username.pwl username.old {hit enter} (username is the name you just found)
Reboot the computer using the power button.

Now, I was able to go in to Safe Mode and I tried what was suggested on the microsoft site.  However, there were 3 .pwl files that came up so I wasn't sure which one to select.  2 were named the same so I went for the one called hpauthor.pwl and I changed it to .old and restarted....error still occured.  Should that have worked in safe mode or should I still tr the C:// method.

No, Safe Mode should work as well. Sorry, took you the long way round, but why not rename all of them? Just to make sure.
