I have the about:blank problem.  I ran SpyBot, AdAware (found 14 coolwebsearch), then RegistryRepair.  If  I change back to my homepage in IE Options it works once before defaulting back to about:blank.
 Ran HJT and fixed a bunch of obvious stuff  & also deleted a file called  sp.dll in Windows\TEMP which appeared about the same time as the problem, but this reappeared, and Cleanup didn't shift it.
Hope you can help me out here, cheers

Set Windows to show Hidden files and folders
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

**(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders. This is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)**

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following: (They may or may not be there)

mstask.exe
MDM.EXE

Turn off System Restore WinXP WinME. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.) Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

Hi, Cactus
Sorry for the delay, had to go out. Looks good so far, the dreaded a:b is not coming up now. FMAHHA.DLL had to be deleted in MsDosPrompt, after removing all its attributes, 'cos for some reason I cannot find the right key(s) to boot into safe mode. CTRL or F8 don't do it, it just won't boot into a menu with a safe mode or even a command prompt option, any suggestions about that?

Just a final note for anyone out there with the same problem - I've had this problem twice now, and it seems to have been released by opening an email that pretended to be from someone in my addressbook. The file SP.DLL is loaded into C:\Windows\TEMP and another DLL(name varies) into C:\Windows\System. This should show up in a search for files created on the date the email was opened.

And to Cactus - Thanks again!
