I inadvertently deleted reference to the monitor from the Device Manager (Windows XP Pro).  Now the computer boots, but the screen goes blank when the XP logon screen is due to appear.   I tried to use Safe Mode (including all the options, such as

Just to be sure, are you getting a picture when the computer is just starting(bios screen)? If you are getting are picture, then I would say that you are having problems when in svga mode, but all is ok in vga mode. You might want to check the pins where you monitor connects to the pc, I have seen bent pins to funny things to monitors.

When you are selecting last know good or safe mode, you said the screen goes blank. So the windows splash screen in not coming up with these selections. But the splash screen comes up when booting in normal mode?

Usually when you delete something from Device Manager, it shouldn't cause any issues. The device that was deleted should get automatically redetected. Hope this helps.
