Just a basic question, have you tried to check for updates using the Microsoft WU website?

Ok... so let's try this.

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK:
regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\wmpui.dll

You receive a message that is similar to:

DllRegisterServer in C:\WINNT\system32\wmpui.dll succeeded.

3. Click OK, and then start Windows Media Player again

Reinstall Windows to get around a not working Windows Media Player? Shall I call in a nurse and some men in white with restraining equipment? Feeling okay?

Daninku was on the right track, but for that WMP10 is not the problem, it's the DivX multilanguage filter mmswitch.ax that is causing the crash. You can try to unregister this filter. Go to Start, Run, type in the box "regsvr32 mmswitch.ax /u" (without the quotes, including the spaces) and hit return. Then reboot your system.

Do you have any codec packs installed, like the Nimo codec pack? If so, which version do you have? Try to update your codecs. And don't install the multilanguage codec if you don't need it.

If you want it again, for something that needs it, always use the latest. Codec pack 8 had a corrupt Divx file.
