Hi,

I am not sure if WinMe has MSCONFIG but try this:

1. Start > Run
2. Type 'msconfig' (without quotes) and hit ok
3. On "General" tab select "Diagnostic Startup" and hit OK
4. Reboot
5. Try reading a cd
6. Don't forget to set back to "Normal Startup" once done.

Were you able to read a cd?

Hi,

If you have a Win98 Startup disk, try booting off it and select the option "With CD-ROM" support. This will load DOS level cdrom drivers. Take note as the drivers load which letter it assigned to the cdrom. Insert a data CD and type the drive letter "x:" assuming it was x and hit enter. Then type "dir" (no quotes) and enter. Do you see a listing of the CD or an error message?

Hi,

You can download a Win98 startup disk here http://www.mirrors.org/archived_software/www.bootdisk.com/winfiles/boot98se.exe (from Bootdisk.com)

Boot off the floppy once created and select with cd-rom support.
At the prompt, type 'dir x:' <ENTER> (no quotes)
(Where x: is the cdrom drive letter assigned during boot up, could be d:)
If able to access cdrom drive then problem is in Windows ME
