PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version:XP Pro
Problem Application Name & Version:
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:

I get a page of wrong results when searching with Google. This is the first problem i have had that cannot be fixed (or recognised) by CWShredder, Adaware, Spybot S&D, and AVG. Please help! I have switched off system restore, unchecked hidden files, and run hijack this. Many thanks in advance.

Since posting this i have updated adaware from 6.0 to SE. this has removed some more stuff, but still not fixed the problem. Seems likely that DeskAdServe and DeskAdKeep are a part of the problem?

The output is:

Set Windows to show Hidden files and folders
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

**(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders. This is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)**

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following: (They may or may not be there)

CTHELPER.EXE
WinStat.exe
WinStatKeep.exe
DeskAdServ.exe
DeskAdKeep.exe

Turn off System Restore WinXP WinME. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.) Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

Go to Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs and remove the
 following if they are there:

Windows AdStatus
DeskAd Service

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders (WinXp has up to 4 of them) / Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your "Recycle Bin" and Reboot.

In Xp, here are some locations of Temp files

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

Turn on System Restore

Before opening your browser goto START>CONTROL PANEL>INTERNET OPTIONS and make sure your Homepage is correct,if not ,type the URL you would like in the HomePage box.

Now re-run HJT and post a new logfile back here.

Cactus, many many thanks for your help. The Google problem seems to be fixed. I note the following however on following your intructions:

CTHELPER.EXE will not delete. got warning message: did i want to continue; said yes; nothing happened. The other processes you listed were not there.

In add/remove programs, got error message: error whilst trying to remove DeskAd Service; said it might already have been deleted.

I could not find the following files/folders you asked me to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLO~1\ipreg32.dll
C:\PROGRA~1\SEARCH~2\SEARCH~1.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\system32\DSMANA~1.DLL

On emptying the temp and temporary internet files folders i found several files called index.dat that it could not delete, and several desktop.ini files that it said were system files; was i sure i wanted to delete; i said no; is this right?
